Well, we've accomplished the first two stops in our Texas --> Missouri--> Illinois--> New Jersey--> Maryland--> Texas Christmas roadtrip \o/
Thus, I am ensconced in my parents' living room, sucking all of their internet to replace as many of the files I lost when my master hard drive died last week >_<
Luckily, I had a backup drive, but I was an idiot and hadn't backed up since March, so . . . let's just say I am going to be downloading frantically for the foreseeable future ^^;
Add that to the end of the semester and holiday craziness, and you'd think I'd have had plenty to keep me busy, but the way my brain works is that lots of stress requires much procrastination, leading to more stress, and thus more procrastination.
Hence:
Ok, so these cookies are a bit of a reboot of the original
Arashi cookie experiment, but I used a much larger cutter, maybe 4 or 5 inches, rather than the original, which was maybe 2 inches.
So here are the reference sketches! And I promise that the cookies were not bald ^^;
Ohno:
Single-breasted, 4 buttons, chest pockets, 3 horizontal stripes slightly above the cuff area of the sleeve, chevron-shaped pockets facing inward on the hips:
Sho: single-breasted, 4 buttons, curved line from shoulder to armpit, with accent button, two stripes at elbow, chevron-shaped pockets facing inward on the hips. I just now noticed not one but two stripes at the wrist, but I'm pretending I never saw that because it's too late now, and I refuse to obsess over it. The cookies are already in the mail :/
Aiba: Single-breasted, 4 buttons, square line with accent button from shoulder to armpit, one (chevron) stripe at cuff, square pockets facing outward at hip, two horizontal stripes at hem:
Nino: Double-breasted, 4 sets of buttons, one chevron pocket at chest, one straight line from shoulder to armpit(?), Stripe at hem and cuff of sleeve, square pocket facing outward:
Jun: double-breasted with 3 sets of buttons, chest pockets, quadruple stripes at cuff with silver square buckle, double stripe at elbow, chevron pockets facing inward at hip.
I didn't bother with the shirts or ties under the trench coats. I am not that masochistic, in terms of the work or the aesthetic.
Like last time, I started with blank cookies and then drew the outline of the trenchcoats
For these cookies, I was most concerned about two things: the sparkliness, and the hair.
Sparkles were pretty easy: glitter and then more glitter. The hair was a bit more work, seriously.
Pre-sparkles:
Much better:
The shine is two glitters and a luster dust. I thought the color came pretty darn close to the costume for a cookie.
Here's some Sho:
To get this red, I had to mix in a bit of an orange, but I think it looked closer:
>_>
Yes, that one decapitated, making it the only one of the batch that I ate. We lost a Nino and an Aiba, too, so the total cookie haul was 48, rather than 50.
Two types of glitter:
They were actually much more glittery in person, but sadly, my camera wasn't all that great at picking up sparkles.
As one might expect, even three different types of glitter weren't enough for Jun. After this coat, we did two more, and it got much closer. One of the glitters had a bluish purple iridescence to it. My camera was again not great for it.
Sparkly Ninos in terrifying numbers congregate to plan world domination:
I used all of these except for the 2nd and 4th from the left on the top row to sparklify Aiba.
SO MUCH GLITTER. Let's just say that these cookies are likely a bit . . . crunchy with the glitters.
Once the colors were on, add the costume details in black piped frosting:
After that, I painted the feet white, to be in keeping with the white Dome sneakers.
Closeups!
I have no idea at all what the hell was going on with the details on Nino's coat. It's like they couldn't decide between the chest pockets on Ohno's trench and the swoopy stripes on Sho's and decided to split the difference.
I used a silver glaze to add the buttons for each
I added Jun's silver buckles on his cuffs:
My friend's camera does a much better job of showing the sparkles, though Sho's red glitter never quite showed up in all its glory:
Phone camera wins hands down for showing glitter--it did make Jun's coat look more purple than it did in person, though.
My whole house is covered in glitter. It's all over everything. I can live with that.
All that was left was the hair!
Yes, Ohno got two colors--one for the roots and one for the tips. Guess who really didn't feel like grading last week?
Roots!
And then I had to do it 9 more times. Did I mention that I was making 10 sets of these?
Ohno was the only one I got done while the sun was still up, but I was pretty happy with how he came out:
CLICK ON ME!!!! (Make flange happy ^^;)
Ok, here are a few examples of each member:
Ohno:
A slightly more sparkly pic with less odd orangeness, from my friend's phone camera:
I love how Ohno's hair turned out. The two colors were a little subtle, but they show up batter in natural light and the whole thing cracked me up.
Sho:
Sho's hair gave me a lot of trouble, mostly because that batch of hair frosting was a bit runny and hard to deal with. I am, however, kind of happy with the little pointy flicks on the backs and sides--I think they convey the texture of his hairstyle--it's not quite as smooth as the Time hair, and a bit wooly.
Aiba:
Anyone who has spent much time on my journal knows
how I feel about Aiba's hair. I don't think mere icing can replicate its utter gloriousness, but I did my best.
The Aiba cookies gave the Ninos a run for their money on sparkliness.
Nino:
I love love love how sparkly he ended up. The cookies never quite reached the godawful yellow-gold mustardity of the original costume, but mixing a gold and copper glitter helped, I think. SO SPARKLY&hearts
Jun:
I was least satisfied with Jun's hair, though I think it's not bad. His short wavy hair looked fabulous in the Dome concert, but didn't necessarily translate well with the round head of the cookie. These pictures give you a better idea of his magnificent sparkliness, though.
Self-indulgent gallery of pictures!
>_> I got a little punchy at the end.
So anyway, I made zillions of cookies and a huge mess.
But seriously, it was worth it&hearts
Soon, I will get back to non-cookie posts. Maybe then my kitchen won't look like rainbows exploded all over it.
