a two-latte, two-movie day

Today was a fun day, although I'm not precisely sure why I feel inclined to write a blog post on this day despite my infrequent posting this summer. Perhaps because the fun activities are easily describable; perhaps because after I spent Monday inside and dry (curled up in my flat, relaxing and watching Rescue Me episodes) and after I spent Tuesday outside and WET (biking and supervising parking), it was a pleasant change to spend a day out socializing yet remain dry. ;)

I can sleep in on Wednesday mornings, which is always wonderful, but when I woke up I discovered a voicemail from Will, which was a pleasant surprise. I arranged with Bob to skip the University Square market, puttered around, and biked to the Rittenhouse area to join him on his apartment search. I looked in on two apartments he'd looked at earlier in the morning and was seriously considering; while we ate matching curried-chicken sandwiches at Bonté's, I helped him think through a comparison between one of the flats and his criteria. [My first latte.]

We walked back down to South St., from where I biked to 11th & Tasker. I'm fond of the neighborhood and people there, although some weeks I have to deal with a lot of yelling. There was some yelling this week, and some crazy-impatient South Philly residents as always, but the grey weather also meant fewer customers and an easier time maintaining the market start time. Phew. I talked to Tom, the fruit & honey guy, and he's still planning to bring his crossbow one of these days! I had my weekly chat with Tracey, everybody's go-to handyman around there. I love the convenience of visiting two markets on Penn's campus on Wednesdays, but I'll miss my friends @ the Fountain!

I steadily, but socially, accomplished several errands after I left the market -- mailing things, checking the status of the store where I want to buy olive oil, buying milk (and getting lessons on cooking okra and kale from Jon) at the Farmstand, visiting the chocolate store. By that time, I just biked down to JLR's apartment -- and we pulled together a quick but tasty supper! :) She had spring mix from Paradise Organics (from the Headhouse market, I assume) with shredded parmesan and pecans, I had corn from Fruitwood Farms (from the Fountain market), and of course I'd bought a treat while I was at the chocolate café.

We made it to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute -- and into the theatre -- with PERFECT timing to catch the beginning of that night's classic film, the 1938 Errol Flynn Robin Hood. Man, I haven't seen that movie for probably 10-15 years, but I used to watch it often when I was very young. In fact, it was slightly bizarre to instinctively recognize the pitch and rhythm of the dialogue, but process the actual words as a separate, new experience. (I'm not sure if that makes any sense.) Such a swashbuckling, innocent, optimistic movie. There was a coffee interlude @ the Milkboy [my second latte], but then P+R enticed me to stay for a second movie, Death at a Funeral. Matthew MacFadyen! Alan Tudyk! Lots of British-accented swearing! It was disfunctional and absurd, but I actually found the characters likeable; I appreciated that the people in couples seemed to care for their partner.

I want to cook this week, but I haven't completely decided when or what.
