There was a brief lull from B5 in my Netflix queue, filled by a few X-Files episodes and a couple movies, but now S5 has begun!

Have you gotten to the Neil Gaimain/Rebo & Zooty episode (Day of the Dead) yet? S5 had a bunch of problems, but that was a high point for the series, imho.

Nope, that's ep #11. I've only finished the first dvd (4 eps) so far. I have seen the 'preview' for that, though, when Londo is bewildered that humans find Rebo & Zooty amusing!

What are some of the problems you think S5 had?

I think the main problem was that JMS thought he had to finish his story in season 4, so much of season 5 feels like an afterthought. Lochley never filled the shoes Ivanova left, either. But there is good stuff to be found, particularly on Centauri Prime.

It's a pathetic indication that I've been browsing the Lurker's Guide too much, when I can imagine what JMS might have to say on the subject. ;) I suspect he'd maintain that although the end of S4 was unfortunately squished together, the long aftermath of S5 is still part of the story and the character development. And he would probably emphasize that Lochley wasn't meant to fill anyone's shoes.

Those do seem to be common critiques, though; we'll see what I think when I've watched the whole season. And Centauri Prime...aww, I tremble for Londo. :(

Oh, trust me, I've read everything JMS had to say. :) I was on rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated when he was; he even answered one of my questions once.
