summer *and* fall

Yesterday was a wonderful day.

I slept in, which was wonderful. Last week there were two nights when I only slept for 4 hours, and I had to wake up at 7.30 am Saturday morning for my Farmstand shift.

I ate some grilled vegetables and leftover baguette. After my party, which was even more low-key than I predicted, I have SO MUCH FOOD in my flat. Grilled veggies, raw veggies that didn't get used, chorizo, almonds & dates, leftover rice from last week, a fresh quart of my adored yoghurt for the coming week, not to mention a new desire to make another tortilla.

I dressed up in dress trousers and a soft grey sweater. Sadly, this was followed by the sole but spectacular instance of STUPID in my day, as I realized the concert I'd planned to attend (a Bach Festival concert for which an acquaintance was providing visuals) was in Chestnut Hill, not center city. And, of course, I'd just missed the appropriate R7. Ugh.

However, I ended up having a lovely afternoon wandering around art studios in Northern Liberties with Mali. I met her at one of her dark rooms, down the block from the Standard Tap, where a man was grilling outside surrounded by music from a boombox and random yard sale junk. For a small contribution to the dark room, he gave us incredibly tasty grilled chicken and sections of grilled corn. Omigosh, so yummy! Eating grilled food outside is the best part about summer, and it was just like that...except with a jacket on. ;)

Mali and I then went down the block from the Tap in the other direction, to see the house/studio of 3 ladies who did printing, bookbindinging, and letter press. Beautiful house, beautiful delicate drawings and prints, friendly artists to talk about them. My favorite part was the narrow brick hallway before the entrance to the house -- small dark blue and white cloth banners fluttered from the ceiling, and a string of Christmas lights ran along one side.

Mali and I wandered around the area some more -- up Lawrence (btwn 4th & 5th) to Girard, stopping at an oils studio at a house with an awesome iron-framed courtyard; to her other darkroom, with an old painted sign 'Club Independence' above the door and fascinating photos; several blocks east of Front on Girard to see if a coffee shop with some of her photographs was open. (Sadly, it wasn't.) It was cold by the end, but for most of the time it was cool and crisp and perfect for wandering along blocks with brick row houses and trees.

We ended the evening by sitting around at Martin's house for awhile, pestering him with cooking questions and eventually being served cheesey scrambled eggs, homefries, and white bread toasted in the oven. Amazing. Breakfast for dinner is the best, and this was so hearty and yummy.

When I got home, I just sat in my new clean apartment for awhile, doing some reading on South Philadelphia, enjoying the view of my wood floors and clutter-free couch, and watching the candle burn.
