Holy Vulcans Batman!

Just got home from seeing the new Star Trek.

Ya'll need to see this movie, it is EPIC. If by any chance you live within an hour of an IMAX theatre, you need to see this movie at that IMAX. It will rock your world - for me, it felt like being inside the movie itself and honestly, one probably couldn't pick a better film to join.

JSYK from the start, I'm keeping this review as spoiler free as possible (meaning, you won't see anything here you wouldn't have been able to see/find on a basic msn entertainment article before the movie came out), but I can't make any guarantees for the comments - just to give a fair warning.

So, without further ado, I present to you my Top Ten Reasons Why You Should See the New Star Trek:

10. Transformers 2 and HP 6 both get pretty awesome trailers which are worth buying a ticket to see on their own merits (especially on an IMAX screen)
9. JJ Abrams deserves some props for finally creating something that makes a modicum of sense to human beings
8. House fans: Dr. Cameron gets a cameo! Apparently she dumps Chase to time travel and have George Kirk's baby in the distant future, who knew?
7. LotR fans: Eomer (Karl Urban) plays Dr. McCoy and it's wonderful to see him again (as he is both hot and funny as hell), sporting a remarkably believable American accent
6. The special effects are OFF THE CHAIN
5. Harold of Harold and Kumar fame plays Sulu, and he does double duty being adorable and a complete badass. The fact that there are a few significant Kirk/Sulu moments should not be overlooked!
4. Anton Yelchin (kid who played Charlie in Charlie Bartlett, for those of you who've seen it [and if you haven't seen it, go rent it and then come back to this]) is Chekov and is lolarious with his over the top Slavic accent and boyish cuteness
3. SIMON PEGG IS A COMEDY GOD (who coincidentally plays Scottie and is nothing short of hysterical every time he's onscreen)
2. Zachary Quinto is clearly a Nimoy clone and is also a total fucking pimp as Spock
1. The Spock/Kirk chemistry in this movie will set your underwear on fire

Let me just say, if it's true that the whole concept of 'slash' came from the original slash separating Kirk/Spock, this movie only goes to reinforce why they deserve that honor.

But my rec doesn't just come down to the actors, although they are truly the backbone of the film and should be given credit - it's how the actors make the characters very fresh and very real and bring the entire Star Trek franchise alive again.

The story is an interesting narrative involving time travel and loops in the space-time continuum, and it provides a really solid stage for all the drama to unfold. But without getting into the plot itself, you don't go to see this movie for the story - it's pretty standard action fare, even if it is executed brilliantly.

'But!' you may protest, 'I am not a Star Trek fan!' Well then, I say to you, you have nothing at all to lose! As with any reboot of a well-loved franchise, compromises have been made between original canon and the new shiny material. For those of you with even a passing familiarity with early Star Trek, this movie may not be exactly what you were expecting.
I consider it only greater endorsement that my Trekkie friends with whom I went to see it tonight came away feeling largely satisfied, which is a rare accomplishment for a prequel as well as a high-octane revitalization of a classic.

So, to conclude, if you like action, romance, humor, action, fantastic CGI, Simon Pegg, hot menz kicking the shit out of each other, action, or any combination thereof, then you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. So go see it!
