It was the summer before my junior year of high school and college was the last thing on my mind. Nonetheless, my parents dragged me to Philadelphia to visit family and, dare I say it, colleges. Starting the search for the perfect school for me began with the University of Pennsylvania, which I soon discovered was nothing that I wanted. Feeling discouraged and wet and cold (the Philadelphia area received four inches of rain that day) I sat in the dining hall with my parents deciding where to go next. My dad insisted I look at Swarthmore. I adamantly refused, but in the end, I found myself in the car driving to Swarthmore’s campus. The rain seemed to worsen and I was still cold; however, as soon as I drove onto the campus, my mood started to improve. Throughout the walking, rather swimming, tour, the rain did not seem to bother me much. I started off the day with the romantic dream of walking onto a campus and knowing that is where I wanted to go to college. Penn was a disappointment, but I fell in love with Swarthmore exactly how I imagined I would fall in love with a school. The other schools I visited on our trip were nice, but none of them had the same effect on me as Swarthmore.
In addition to the feeling I had while on campus, Swarthmore has everything I wanted in a school. After attending a small middle school, then a large high school, I learned that I prefer small schools. Swarthmore’s student body of about 1,500 is ideal for me. The location approximately twenty minutes from Philadelphia is perfect because it gives the students the best of both worlds - a quiet and rural campus in close proximity to an important city. I think a liberal arts education would give me more options after graduation and better prepare me for whatever career I may choose than a school with a specific academic strength. My interests range from art history to psychology, and history or Spanish and with all of the different classes Swarthmore offers, I am sure I will find my niche and place in the world. My favorite aspect of Swarthmore is that it has a quirky sense of humor and amusement while still maintaining a strong academic program. The “Screw your Roommate” Dance and Crum Creek Regatta seem to be original and eccentric diversions from the rigorous course load. All in all, I know Swarthmore College is the perfect school for me.
