I love that they had to write that the island (Whatever it is) wasnt to scale.
And dude, that isnt a poem. A verse from a Rage against the machine song maybe, part of a rap, maybe. But in no way could it ever be called a poem. Ever.
Um, that'd be Alaska and it's a poem, you probably just think all poems have to rhyme. They're "po·em Audio pronunciation of "Poem" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pm) n.
1. A verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme. 2. A composition in verse rather than in prose. 3. A literary composition written with an intensity or beauty of language more characteristic of poetry than of prose. 4. A creation, object, or experience having beauty suggestive of poetry."
I know you're not American, you're Brittish (or at least, you're in London). Regardless, that's not the point. If it isn't a poem, that's fine, because it still expresses an experience, idea, and emotion. It can't be described as a rap, nor a Rage against the machine verse (forgive me for not knowing what that means), so I guess since it's also not a poem or prose, it defies definition:-)
And i'll settle with that. Forgive me for attacking you so harshly, ive had a fucking nasty day analysing poetry for University and you just pushed a button that was waiting to pop. (Its currently quarter to 4 in the morning).
Rage Against the Machine is a band, very anti-government and all that. They have themes much like the stuff you were writing.
Yea, actually. I'm more of a tech guy who enjoys writing than anything else. Don't worry about it, I've been a little touchy recently myself. Heh, not to mention, my 2 college English classes have been more on Gothic novels and really stupid short stories more than poetics, so my poetry stuff is a little..hrm..dated? lol. I'll have to check into that band, sounds interesting...
