PHOENIX -- A 17-month-old boy left alone in a car for at least seven hours in a north Phoenix parking lot was found dead by his mother who told police she had forgotten he was inside.
Police said the mother had planned to drop her baby off at day care before heading to work at a Hooters restaurant near 29th Avenue and Bell Road.
Instead, officers said the mother went straight to work with the baby still in the vehicle.
She arrived at work at 10 a.m. and when her shift ended around 5 p.m., she discovered the baby was inside the vehicle and unresponsive, investigators said.
Authorities pronounced the baby dead.
The high temperature in Phoenix on Tuesday was 89 degrees.
Police said the windows of the silver Honda Civic were tinted, making it difficult for anyone to tell a baby was inside.
Nationwide, 32 children die every year after being left unattended in motor vehicles, according to researchers at San Francisco State University.
