Jon Stewart and ‘The Daily Show’: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at 9 Essential Moments

I am going to miss Jon Stewart on The Daily Show more than I can possibly express. I remember watching him in mr. muse’s apartment (before he was officially mr. muse and we were just engaged) when Jon took over the show and liking him even then, but throughout my adult life Jon has grown into a clever, cutting, and thoughtful commentator on politics and the world. His version of The Daily Show makes me think, laugh, and get angry all at once. I read lots of news sources, but Jon makes me want to change things instead of sink into despair at the way the world is.

There have been a lot of silly segments over the years, but what I admire most is how he is able to cut straight to the core of issues, interviews politicians on all sides with respect and yet without pulling punches, fights for important issues without apology, and doesn’t give up. He can express his frustration with policy, talking points, or the realities of the world without losing the ability to laugh about it. I'd rather laugh than cry.

We bought our very first TiVo in 1999-2000 specifically so that we could watch The Daily Show over dinner regardless of how late mr. muse got home. I’ve had a season pass for the show from the very start on every TiVo we’ve owned since then. I will likely continue to watch the show and see how Trevor Noah finds his feet (it took Larry Wilmore a bit to turn The Nightly Show into a show I love, after all, and John Oliver's Last Week Tonight is absolutely brilliant, especially in its long-form pieces), but it won’t be the same. Without Jon Stewart, it can't be the same. He's not perfect, but he's learned. He's tried. He's grown.

He's changed the world, and I can't quite imagine what life - and the upcoming election cycle - will be without him.

I admire him so deeply. I will miss him so much.
