Hedwig

mr. muse and I have been having one of our whirlwind Broadway weekends. Three shows in two days. Of interest around here is probably that tonight we went to Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

I’m still in a post-Hedwig delirium, but what I can say about Darren as Hedwig is that (compared to NPH, whom I saw in the role last year and who was great but a showman instead of a musician) he gave us a really fucking good rock concert. You can see Darren's roots as a musician. He knows how to own the stage, and he knows how to fucking kill those songs.

But even more, he nailed the emotional and physical transformations in a way I can’t even describe. He is such a physical actor, and it was so impressive to get to watch him play the different characters Hedwig slips in and out of. There were so many subtleties to his voice and his body. It was absolutely enthralling. He was hilarious and harsh and heartbreaking. What a masterpiece of a show for him to show his range of talent.

We got to go backstage afterwards, which was a thrill. We got to walk the stage, got extra lucky and were taken underneath it to see some of its workings (so coooool), and then got to see Darren in his dressing room and chat with him for a bit. He was just so lovely and friendly to us, and I got like four or five hugs from him to boot. :D

And then I got to walk out of the stage door and past all of the fans at the barricades, and man, that's a daunting sight. There were a ton of people there. What a blur of faces. I'm impressed at how he manages it each and every night.

theater and performances, squee with me
