Writing meme.

I almost never post memes, but I love talking about writing and won't be doing much actual writing for the next couple of weeks, so if anyone wants to ask this'll keep my hand in, at least a little...

(Okay, so I'm going to answer one or two at a time, since my computer time is so short this week, but I love talking about this stuff!)

C. Is there a trope you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole?

I try not to work in absolutes, but Mpreg is the obvious answer for me. I really have issues around mpreg and have only read one fic with it that truly worked for me; it was a Teen Wolf fic where it was a horror story, not the sweet and cuddly tone the tripe usually takes. I can't imagine writing it.

That said, I am a pretty contrary person, and sometimes I chew on ideas that don't compel me to see how I could make them work. (See my answer about dom!Blaine/sub!Kurt and why I keep thinking about it, even though it's not how I see them.) That's in fact how I wrote "Twenty Tropes for Real Boys," because I kept thinking about how I didn't want to write AU tropes for Klaine but was struck by the idea of twisting the tropes to make them part of the real world. I haven't ever come up with a way to make mpreg work in my head, and I'm not particularly interested in doing so... but never say never. I'm contrary. :)

H. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

My very favorite piece of dialogue I have ever written comes from my Sports Night fic "Doing It":

(Natalie is going around the studio telling everyone one by one that Dan and Casey are 'doing it'.)

Natalie was out the door before Jeremy could finish his thought. She ran into Isaac in the hallway. "Isaac! Dan and Casey are - "

"If you're going to finish that sentence with anything other than 'in their seats in the studio' or 'on fire' I don't want to hear it," Isaac told her.

I love Isaac's line. I love it. I had a whole other little interaction planned for Natalie and Isaac, and when I was writing along and got to Natalie's line the Isaac in my head just stopped her dead and said that, and I knew it was perfect. I knew it was right. It is so him. He doesn't want to get embroiled in the nonsense and the gossip, and his dry, grumbly sense of humor feels right to me, and I just... yes. I love this line.

In the Glee fandom, there are a lot of bits of my dialogue that I really enjoyed writing, but the one that gives me chills every time I think of it and put tears in my eyes when I first wrote it is from Near Misses:

"I want to bring you flowers," Blaine called after him in a low, choked voice.

Kurt stopped dead.

His ears ringing, he exhaled and slowly turned back around. "What?" That couldn't possibly be what Blaine had just said.

Blaine was looking at him with his head held high and his eyes full of fear, but his voice didn't waver when he said, "I want to bring you flowers."

Kurt couldn't get enough air in his lungs to answer, but it didn't matter because Blaine went on.

"I want to," Blaine said. "Every day. I want to take you to dinner. I want to sing to you outside your window. I want to hold your hand and walk you to class and kiss you goodnight and - I want all of that. I want all of it with you, and I - "

Blaine took a shaking breath. "Kurt, you're my best friend, and if I lose that I don't know what I'm going to do but… Can I bring you flowers? Please?" he asked in an aching whisper.

"I want to bring you flowers,"

Heart squeezed. Without fail, every single time I read this bit. Not even a little bit hyperbolic. Even though I know what happens next, I can barely breathe through this section. So I'm glad you're proud of it!
