Writing meme.

I almost never post memes, but I love talking about writing and won't be doing much actual writing for the next couple of weeks, so if anyone wants to ask this'll keep my hand in, at least a little...

I love the idea of taking a trope and turning it on its head. It's been said that there are no new stories, only new ways of telling the same story. So to take a cliché / trope and twist it into something different is a terrific way to do it, I think. It shows you're looking at something from a different angle, appreciating a different view of it. All sorts of unique stories can come when a writer does that. Very cool! :)

I agree, my first thought is that Kurt is Dominant and Blaine would be the sub, so writing Kurt as a control freak sub... sounds like a challenging story to build, but one that could be fascinating. You know what they say, never say never! ;)

Speaking of which, are there certain types of stories that you would never write, or even never read? I think everyone has their own lines they won't cross. Though I've also found that some things I thought I'd never read, I've ended up finding exceptions to the rule. Has that been the case for you as well?

"Don't be a writer. Be writing." What a marvelous statement. I can see why that would be a nudge to get moving and get writing. I think that's sometimes my hang-up. I get so caught up in, "I would like to be a writer" (even on a hobby-like scale), but I really should -- as you say so well -- sit down and do it. There comes a point where I have to stop over-thinking about it and just get writing. I keep saying, now that I'm done with school, I'd like to get back to writing. This is a good reminder that I should stop saying that and instead start doing that. Thanks for the quote!

I have to say, I got chills when I read the part about your muse. I love Henry V, love Kenneth Branagh's film version of it, and LOVE Derek Jacobi as the Chorus. The way he says those very words: "O, for a muuuuuuse of fire!" LOVE IT!!!

I think I can relate to what you're saying about how a story can take hold and consume you and your thoughts until you finish it. I don't know what form my muse is, I don't think it's fiery like yours, but it definitely keeps pushing at me until I stop and write down my thoughts. :)

Actually, oddly enough, I got a nudge while watching The Normal Heart the other day. I haven't written a word in several years, not since school took over my life, but there was something about Mark Ruffolo's passionate performance and the way his character railed at everyone that stirred up something in my brain. I actually had to pause watching the show for about five minutes while I quickly jotted down some dialogue that popped into my head out of nowhere, dialogue for a story I started back in 2010 that's been on the shelf waiting for me to get done with school. Seems my muse is nudging me to get back to it now. ;)

Anyway, I love the visual of your muse, this fiery force that burns low like embers and then stirs up, sparks flying everywhere, as it consumes you and drives you. Awesome.

I try never to say never. I prefer not to read mpreg, fics with unhappy endings and/or death, baby!fic, and non-con, but when it's an author or reccer I trust I will often try fic types I wouldn't normally read and see what I think about them. I try to keep an open mind, and I'm always curious about why a trope that doesn't work for me works for someone else. So I like to check out what are likely good versions of the trope to try to understand. There are always exceptions to every rule for me. :)

Yes! Do it! Just sit down and do it. It doesn't have to be "good" or end up as anything, if those are pressures that are stopping you. Just write!
