Rectangle Paper

I have been contemplating the philosophical implications of rectangle shaped paper... like how it influences graphic design, advertising, art, etc. It is not the most pleasing shape to the human eye, so why rectangular? I mean rounded corners is more organic and pleasing but perhaps too much of a contrast to all the straight lines in houses (where "paper" is displayed on walls). It definitely allows for the most space available in which to convey information, but why do people hang on to it after printing has come so far? Advertisements and fliers, even canvas, doesn't need to maximize on space so why not switch to more organic shapes? I was totally sober at Aroma during the down pour looking at the community board thinking about how unoriginal all the fliers were when this occurred to me. I wonder just how much the shape of paper influences our every day lives? Any thoughts?
