Summary:  Sam needs help from a demon... again.

“Take him!  Take him inside, run!”

Dean watched as Ruby grabbed Sam’s hand and ran with him into the motel.  Sending his brother to safety with a demon was still the biggest oxymoron going in his world, but it was the only way right now.

They ran into the room and slammed the door shut, locking it out of habit more than to stop the ghosts.  Sam tossed a tube of salt to Ruby and together they set about sealing all of the entrances, keeping out the spirits for as long as possible.

“It won’t hold them off forever.  Those are some strong pissed of spirits, but it should buy us some time until Dean and Cas can work out what to do.”

Sam slumped down onto the bed, his back against the screen covered in a crazed pattern of Viking helmets and ships.  He rubbed his hands over his eyes and started to reason aloud.

“We’ve done The Witnesses, we lost that fight... how come more of them are coming, and how come just for me?”

“This is different to The Witnesses Sam.  These aren’t the ghosts of the people you failed; they are pissed of spirits who were stopped doing whatever it was they were about in the first place.  Specifically spirits that you stopped as it was your blood that was taken to break the seal.  All those bones you burned, all those hauntings where you swooped in and stopped some evil mojo happening - they are all back and really pissed.  They are after you, so you have to stay here with me until your brother can stumble his way into fixing this.”

“Why are you here anyway - you said no more angels, no more Dean?”

“Ah, I just can’t bear to leave a pretty damsel like you in distress” she replied with a bitter laugh.

Sam looked up, big brown puppy eyes filled with concern.

“Ruby...”

“I know, I am just the demon.  Used when needed to protect those who aren’t as expendable, too low to think about any other time”

“Ruby, stop...”

“No, you stop Sam.  I have spent too long now trying to prove myself.  Trying to prove this once evil, always evil thing is a crock of shit.  I would say this is the last time I help, but we both know I can’t stay away even if I know I am being used for...”

He silenced her with a gentle kiss.  Gone was the fervent passion, the need for her to make him feel whole again.  Tenderness had taken over, and softly he held her tiny face in his strong hands and he let one kiss quieten all of her fears.

She backed away slowly, unsettled by the change.  “Sam, I can’t do this anymore.  I am not just the demon...”

“shhhhh....”

She felt him holding her again, his mouth covering hers, still gentle, but much more insistent, his tongue gently parting her lips.  She felt his warm, soft tongue sliding over hers, pressure a mix of desire and gentleness that she couldn’t remember from being a human, and certainly not in her demon years.

His hands began to slide down her body, cupping her small pert breasts, cherishing every inch of her.  She felt him begin to drag her top over her head, freeing her skin to his touch.  Pulling off his t-shirt, she began to run her hands across his broad shoulders, his immense chest.  She kissed him hard, and he carried her to the bed.

It took moments to remove the rest of their clothes, the need to be touching far greater than anything else right now.  The sound of ghosts battering at the doors was lost in the throb of heartbeats.

Sam lay above Ruby, his hands covering places they had been, but never explored before.  It was like he was feeling her for the first time, sliding his tongue over her nipples, feeling her strong thighs with his firm hands.  Able to wait no longer, he thrust his hard cock into her wet and waiting body.  With each thrust, he went deeper into her, holding her closer, becoming one with her.  She dragged him into her as far as she could, holding him there, never wanting him to leave.  With a shuddering groan, Sam whispered “I love you”, and kissed Ruby deeply, pulling her body tight to his chest.

He opened his eyes as her mouth opened, demon smoke pouring out into the room.

A primal yell filled the air as he saw what was happening.

As the smoke dissipated, a scattering of silver glistened over everything in the room’s low light.  Sam realised that the battering had now stopped, but holding the empty shell of Ruby’s body to his, he didn’t care.

He raised his tearstained face as the door opened, not caring if the spirits were back.  Dean and Cas entered slowly, feeling the pain in the room before seeing.

Cas touched the sparkling surfaces and said simply in a low voice

“This is soul.  Her demon pact was destroyed and she has been released”.

As Sam rocked on the bed, unable to part with her, he realised that love was all that had been needed to set Ruby free.
