In Gensokyo, we lacked a proper troupe at all, and therefore went a more "community theater" route. The results, I'm certain, aren't that much better.

Mm. Sadly the Fire Nation is too large for such a small country thing.

Thought I do recall, in the days of my youth, attending a few plays in Paris before the Germans occupied it...

An occupation? Clearly then your people were not strong enough to hold the forces of these "Germans" back.

I do not consider them to be "my people". They were humans, after all. And humans fighting in their human wars was of little interest to me.

Youkai (妖怪) is a term mostly associated with Japanese folk creatures and ghosts. The term can also apply broadly to anything that is a supernatural being or legend, from any culture. Because there are thousands of stories of magical beings around the world, the different types of youkai are endless. Fairies, vampires, oni, and nekomata can all be found in Gensokyo. Alternatively, it is a common Japanese belief that after a certain amount of time, ordinary objects and animals gain life and personality, becoming a kind of youkai as well. In some cases even a normal human can become a youkai under the right conditions ( ... )

So in short, they are a type of spirit that lives amongst humans.

Spirits could be called youkai, yes. But the term is far more broad than that. I am, specifically, a youkai wizard, for example.

A wizard? Magics and illusions.

Magic, yes. Illusions, no. I specialize in elemental magic.
