Okay :D In her canon, Astra is basically - as I understand it, the light or purity in a person's heart. Everyone in canon has it, but the astra shines to varying degrees. Normal people, it just a regular light, but in Polka, it shines the brightest. Because there's so much of it and it shines so brightly, it pretty much is killing her. The astra is a source of her magic, and everyone who has magic in her canon is dying of an illness.
Second point: Polka is meant to be a sacrifice to 'calm' her world down whenever it starts to get unbalanced with the threat of war and such. She's made the same journey for hundreds of years, and each time her journey ended with her throwing herself into the sea (what she calls becoming a Heavens Mirror), the world 'resets'. Any destruction or desolation the land takes is reborn, Polka is reborn and the cycle starts again.
Third and Last point: Seeing as her astra is what is killing her, making her ill and the like, there's really only one way of extending her life - by using the astra up. There were spirits of the forest called agogos in her world, and the Mother Agogo could absorb her astra when it got to be too much for her and she collapsed. Similar case here - when the astra gets to be too much for her, Polka's going to be able to use her astra to restore the land around here for a small area.
