Thankfully, Black Friday wasn't too bad to us today. It wasn't overwhelmingly busy. It was still kind of a sucky today, mainly because I didn't sleep well last night. I didn't crack too many smiles until people kept pressing a button on a duck in our store. It's called the "Nutquacker". The duck's dressed like Santa and quacks the Nutcracker song. He also dances sideways. It's funny. I bought him after I clocked off, and it scared the dogs when I brought it home. They were interested until I hit the button. Casper started barking at it.
Jim Butcher's new book, Princep's Fury, is out. Of course, since we're so behind on our stocking, it's still in our back room. But I finally found it today. In a couple days I'll start getting 30% off for Employee Appreciation Month (funny how that coincides with the holiday season) so once that discount kicks in I'll buy that book. Right now I'm slowly getting through Russell Kirkpatrick's newest book. I read his first three during the summer; they're called the Fire of Heaven series. Kirkpatrick is heavy on description, especially when it comes to describing the land. It's kind of Tolkeinish, but I wouldn't say it's as boring. Especially not this new book, called Path of Revenge. In the first book of Fire of Heaven, the action was slow to start. The main character just spent time pining over a beautiful girl who didn't like him for much of the first 50 or 100 pages. Once the action did start, though, it was more entertaining. With Path of Revenge, the prologue is one of the most gripping prologues I've ever read. Kirkpatrick does such a fine job establishing who wants revenge, why he wants it, and how he plans to do it that it's almost suspenseful by the end. I'm only halfway through the first chapter (they're long chapters and I haven't been reading a lot at a time) but the conflict between the protagonist and everyone around him makes for some very good exposition. I look forward to reading the rest of it, and the other two books.
