"So I'm standing in line, right, and this guy... Fraser, are you listening to me?"

Fraser was looking at him, sure, but he kept glancing over Ray's shoulder at something out the window. "Yes, of course, Ray."

"So this guy says to me... Fraser!"

Fraser's eyes jerked back to meet his. "I'm sorry Ray, but there appears to be something rather unusual taking place on the other side of the road."

Ray turned around. "What are you talking about? I don't see nothing."

"Oh," said Fraser. "Well, I'm sure it's nothing." He raised his eyebrows at Ray significantly. "Please, Ray, continue."

"So he tells me to stop--"

"Oh dear," said Fraser, getting to his feet.

Ray twisted his neck around sharply, and if he had to see a neck specialist or whatever they were called over this he was really never going to forgive the mountie ever.

A group of men in suits had were spilling out of a nondescript black car, with some very illegal weapons in hand.

Fraser was halfway down the street, not too far behind a frantically barking Diefenbaker, before Ray had finished saying "stop, police!"

The men in black were chasing another man, further up the street. Ray swore, and headed for the car.

He started the car, called it in, flipped the siren on and honked the horn until Fraser finally noticed and diverted into the road for Ray to pick him up. "So what do you wanna do?" asked Ray.

"Well, at first glance I wasn't certain whose side I should be on, however after carefully studying the pursuers I have concluded that they are not in fact law enforcement officials, therefore I believe our first priority should be in helping the pursuee."

"Right," said Ray, without blinking. "So how do you propose we do that?"

"At the next cross street, we could get in front of him and have him enter the car."

"Yeah, so then the men in black will have my numberplate and can follow me and shoot me dead in the night, great plan."

The next thing he knew, they were hiding in a musty basement with a scruffy dark-haired man who introduced himself as simply Jarod.

"I shouldn't have got you involved," said Jarod, pacing uneasily around the basement.

"What's this, got us involved? You didn't get us involved, he got us involved. That's what he does, gets involved in things!"

"I'm sorry, Ray, it just seemed like the right thing to do."

"So what exactly are those guys after you for, anyway?"

Jarod hesitated.

"Oh, come on, we're in this now. The least you can do is tell us what we're in for."

"They're my former employers," said Jarod. "They want me to do something for them."

"But you don't want to?"

"No," said Jarod.

"And they won't take no for an answer, huh?"

"They wouldn't even see that it was an option to refuse," said Jarod.

"What, like the mob?"

"Something like that."

"Oh, man," Ray groaned. "How do I always end up in situations like this?"
