ratings, JC, language drift, elitism, a little less conversation, stiff upper lip, nostalgia, cheese

I keep thinking I've posted about stuff, and then I realize that no, the lj posts I make in my head stay in my head.

Things I haven't, in fact, written about lately:

1, I never realized until just now that putting an NC-17 label on a story could be interpreted as me saying people under 18 shouldn't read it. No, really. I guess it comes from never having been subjected to those ratings in any other context and also from not having had anyone try to limit my reading when I was under 18. I always just thought of it as a piece of useful information: smut here. Or violence, but usually not in my stories. It's almost enough to make me consider the lemon/lime labels instead, except... fruit. I dunno.

2, JC was awfully pretty at Challenge. Well, all of them were, but I really liked JC's hair, and that silly blue curtain/bedspread shirt. Very pretty. The outfit that makes him look strangely like my grandmother is a bit less pretty. But amusing.

3, Terminology changes really fast in online fandom, and it makes me feel so old. *totters* Like OTP, which seems to mean "one of the ten pairings I quite like" nowadays. And apparently chan is now conflated with shota. I can't keep up.

4, I'm a fanfic elitist. I think. Unless the meaning has changed in the past five minutes.

5, Some pairings and universes support witty banter better than others. Some don't really support it at all, and opening up a can of Generic Banter for them is just going to look really weird. Also, it's funnier when you know where to stop. Also, it's funnier if the banter is not utterly lame.

6, Sheila posted about stoic characters she knows and loves, and I read along with a sort of yes, no, maybe response, until I realized that aha, it's not the stoics I like, as such, it's the repressed ones. Which can be either the ones who know perfectly well themselves why they keep everything bottled up, and just need a chance to blow off steam now and then (prime example: Remus Lupin), or the ones who are a complete represso-mess and need to be poked at until something interesting happens (prime example: Major Eberbach).

7, Sometimes I really miss mailing lists.

8, Allerum is an excellent cheese.
