The weekend of restful cherry-eating was a great success. Mm, cherries. Am home now, and have potted two baby geraniums that I hope will eventually do me proud.

I have large-fandom stress. This is a very BNL malaise, with a pervasive refrain of it's all been done; why post a story when someone else is bound to have done the same clever plot twist ( Read more... )

Also, so impressed by Greece and their win.

Yes! They really did deserve to win. I was surprised, expecting their defensive focus to be dull--but instead, it was so entertaining and exciting. I felt sorry for the Portugal players trying to pass beyond that defensive wall, only to have the ball immediately rebound, like those wooden paddles with the ping-pong ball tied to it with a rubber band...I'm sure there must be a proper name for those *g*.

Placeholder: I had some vague thoughts about the wave theory and how pairings and themes are contextualized against both the source material and all other versions that a reader has seen and how that affects potential criticism, but I think I lost it among the strawberries.

I would like to read your thoughts on this--particularly where wave theory fits in *g*--because I think that context of what's been written before can have a huge impact on how a story's received; or maybe not received, but at least how it fits in with the whole lineage of what came before. Which can allow for nuances of meaning that might not otherwise be understood; but if one wants to write a story where Lupin and Snape are trapped in a coal mine, and is unaware of the fourteen stories out there that already chronicle the adventures of Lupin and Snape trapped in a coal mine, it can be kind of disheartening, though maybe not surprising, when no one seems to care about chronicle #15.

Oh, yeah. I feel like I'm writing the 7, 547th coal mine story, right now. I think my thought was that fanfic criticism is... something-or-other wave, regardless of what the story can be categorized as. I just need to see the wave theory again. I probably don't quite know what I'm talking about. :)

Full of admiration for Greece, still. The whole team was so beautifully organized, they knew exactly what they were doing and they kept doing it and being successful at it.
