So
people are talking about possession and fandom (I love
metablog, and not having to look up all the links...), and about feeling a certain sense of ownership about shows and characters and one's own characterization of a character and so on. Interesting. I don't really have that feeling of connecting on a possessive level with a character and not liking it when others write that character differently. I like the way we can all have our own personal... whoever. Like, I have a Mulder, well, a couple, really, and Anna has a few Mulders and Te has some and there are whole archives full of Mulders and Jane or Joe Q. Fanperson can sit down and write their own Mulder, there can be any number. That's one of the things I love about fandom, really, the way everyone else can have a Mulder that's different from mine, and if I weren't so lazy I'd go hunt for a link to Our Mulders.
I really wanted to talk about titles. Right now I'm procrastinating on the final edits of this HP story that I had real trouble coming up with a title for, and I realized I hate finding story titles even more than I hate writing summaries, so I started thinking about Fanfic Titles I Really Really Love. Some people seem to be naturals at finding good story titles, and I want to bribe them into doing titles for me, too. Like whoever used Shiny and New for a title--I was struck down with mad envy for not thinking of it first, and now I can't even remember who did it, which is kind of sad.
I love the titles for Julad's supermarket stories, Everything You Need in One Convenient Location and The Freshest and the Best. Anna's Fragments of a Man on Paper. Merry's unused Vampire Waffle Dreams. Their Faces Resemble His, Basingstoke. These Things Do Not Remember You, Gwyneth Rhys. World Burning Down, shalott. Maidens in the Mirror, Sabina Tang. English As He Spoke It, Sandys. My Mother's House, Lemon Drop. The Angle of the Wrist, A C Chapin. Lone Primate, Nonie Rider. Green But for a Season, !Super Cat.
And a whole bunch of others, but the point is, I have no idea what these titles have in common, why I love them, or how to come up with titles of my own that would intrigue others the way these titles intrigued me when I first saw them. Feh. How do people do it?
