I'm on the edge of something

Remix. Weh. I thought I had an idea, but now I think my idea is possibly the wrong kind of idea. I can't help thinking about the original version of the story as canon, and myself as writing fanfic for it, rather than doing a different version of it, so my idea is more Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Yentas than Fan Story a Go-Go, Extended Club Version.

But this is one of the things I love about popslash fandom: the yentas. No, seriously. I'm a sucker for good yenta stories, but in most of my fandoms, I've had a problem with the actual yentas, who were often less than convincing as such because they had lives and occupations and personalities that didn't lead me to think that they'd feel any particular interest in the love lives of Pretty Boy A and Pretty Boy B. (And don't get me started on the friendly neighborhood librarians.) Here, though? Five people who spend extended periods of time in each other's pockets, are genuinely fond of each other and presumably have a strong interest in each other's welfare - it's an ideal setup for both yenta and anti-yenta behavior (the latter defined as no, no, listen, he's all wrong for you, he will break your heart just like he broke mine/random group member's/old girlfriend's/old boyfriend's/list of seventeen implausible celebrities'). Bring it on, I say.
