I did start over with my yuletide writing, which is to say, I picked up a pinch hit. Pinch hit is now done and off with beta, and once again I'm left thinking, but don't I usually write stuff at this time of year ( Read more... )

Disturbing, huh? Oh, is it that shonen-ai manga about a photographer whop gets kidnapped by various guys? I seem to have a vague memory...

This leads me to suspect you don't know the Onmyoji movies about the historical figure Abe no Seimei, a famous Yin Yang master of the Heian period who was rumored to be part fox? Then I really must pimp them! They are lovely, cracky fun, with incredibly gorgeous costumes and startlingly horrible special effects. (The director exhausted his budget on oodles of elaborate, authentic costumes, and then they had to fall back on special effects that are sometimes akin to dangling a UFO on a string.)

The movies also feature a relationship that isn't so much slashy as outright slash. And it's a relationship of the kind I like best - where the two people are very different, and complement each other so well *because* of their differences. The half-fox magician Seimei is cool, sly, tricky, mysterious and distant, only partially part of the human world; the nobleman Hiromasa, on the other hand, is open, straight-forward, naive and entirely caught up in the strict rules and rituals of court life... but kind-hearted, warm, and open-minded. They are both totally fascinated, puzzled and caught up in each other. It's lovely. :-)

Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of trouble finding downloads for the movies - if you're interested, I can send you a DVD! In the meantime, have a dramatic trailer:

(Hiromasa's the pretty one with the flute, and the arrows. *g*)

Those are really splendid sets and costumes. *admires* I'll keep that in mind for the next time I sit around muttering that there's nothing that interests me and my life is so sad. I seem to be at a point right now, though, where actual people, as opposed to manga and anime characters, all look a little strange to me. But experience tells me that this will pass, so. ;)

That thing with the photographer sounds... yeah, disturbing. And no, that's not Loveless; that's about a 12yo boy who has a difficult enough life already, when this 20yo guy turns up and says hey, so, I'm your fighter and you're my sacrifice, and then battle challenges pop up from everywhere, and... Okay, I have trouble describing it. It's very pretty, and everyone's screwed up to some degree. I like the manga better than the anime (then again, that's true of very nearly every title I can think of).

Yes, they're gorgeous movies. And occasionally very funny ones, too. :-) And Seimei is *brilliant* - he even looks like a fox. Plus, he does weird things with Hiromasa-shaped shikigami. ;-)

I know just what you mean about being too used to manga and anime characters! I had a phase like that, too - before I fell for Japanese and Korean drama series with real, live actors. :-) Such excellent stuff there... so if you do ever find yourself moping because nothing interests you, drop me a line and I'll rec you bunches of excellent dramas in pretty much any genre you care to name (though science fiction is rarer than most other things!). *g*

Huh, looks like I haven't heard about Loveless yet, after all. Oh, right! The one with all the kidnapping is called Viewfinder. Wonder how I got that mixed up...
