a girl's best friend

I've been really cranky for a few days now. Really cranky, wanting to bite random little old ladies in the street cranky. I've been trying to cure this with Cold Comfort Farm and raspberry crumble and really quite a lot of Stargate Atlantis, but then today I made the mistake of trying to buy clothes again, and was consumed by the desire to do ( Read more... )

God, pants shopping. ::groan:: I just tried again last week, and even though I'm built on a small scale, I have the exact same problem. I can't imagine who these hipless women are that they build pants for, especially these low-riding, just-above-the-hairline things. I pull them up, I push them down, I can't figure out where they're supposed to sit, all I know is that if I can get them past my ass, there's room to raise cattle in the waistband, and space to raise a family of five down each thigh.

I know my hips are wide for my size, but it's not like I *invented* the hourglass figure. Who the hell are these pants supposed to be for?

Sometimes I try to construct these imaginary people in my head. Then I start laughing like a loon and some nice saleslady comes to ask if I'm all right. Maybe in the future I'll just say that I've decided to start a cattle ranch. :)

They are not actually making clothes for women, are they? (Makes you want to make snarky remarks about cross-dressing boys and designer's sexual orientation.)

They're definitely not designing for me. The idea that there might be more than one body type out there doesn't seem to have penetrated.

Do you have DiDi stores where you are? The ones here seem to design more along the lines you describe. Failing that, a friend who will sew in return for raspberry crumble? (Go custom, is what I always say. That or wear kimonos.) And I vote porn too. :)

Nope, I've never heard of DiDi stores. And I know a lot of people who'll sew Renaissance dresses in return for raspberry crumble, but pants, not so much. I might have a go myself, except I suck at pockets, and I can't live without pockets.

Here's a pocket tutorial (scroll down). I found the patternmaker program itself interesting, but the pants do that American fold/pulling at the crotch thing (American suit pants & slacks; Levi's behave the way I expect pants to behave in the groin). Also pockets sewn *on* are easy, and if you leave part of the third side unstitched so that one corner flops over where you put your hand in the pocket, pretty spiffy looking as well. :)

*checks website* Huh, DiDi appears to be a uniquely Dutch business. Who'da thunk?

i feel with you every sentence of the way. i sometimes look at fifties movies and actually *envy* the clothes that accentuate narrow waists and hips.

[though i've noticed sth almost more unsettling. some designers for adult women (as opposed to the teenies on runways) actually do create clothes that fit me...but, of course, i'm paying for it. that and being a size smaller...]

another vote for porn *g*

I like that everyone is so supportive of my porn habit. :) A couple of sizes up or down don't seem to make much difference in terms of the relationship between my shape and that of available clothing, but I'm going to try (when I've recovered my equilibrium) a different type of store.
