I didn't talk about the drabbles, because then things would just get messy.
01. Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
So much more than I thought I was capable of, since I spent the last six years wanting to write but I only have a couple thousand words of finished product to show for it. The last few months have been disappointing though, as I've been doing worse physically and it's drained my mental energy as well.
02. What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Haha. Ha. Basically every crack pairing that crossed my mind, to which I thought "Psshht, I can't write that, yuck," and wrote it soon after.
03. What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
sparks fly from her fingertips, Claire-centric AU
I struggled with this fic for a month, restarted it several times, before I just said "Screw it, I'm going to write this and it's going to be awesome." It was a big breakthrough in my writing - when I finished it I seriously felt like I could fly write anything I wanted.
04. Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I'm still learning to stop taking the safe route, but I have definitely progressed in the "just say what you mean" department. Romance, violence, backstories, stronger themes. Just the act of letting other people see my creative endeavors.
05. Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Short term: I plan to work on that mythology/backstory series in the next few months. Long term: original stuff; get some serious work done on my sci-fi book.
06. From my past year of writing, what was...
My Best Story:
Erode, Esau and Jacob
like i am imprisoned, Ben/Kate
you never can tell with bees, Ben/Kate
I'm pretty critical of myself, and I often find parts of my fics that I feel I could/should have done better, but with these I go "Look at that. You wrote that. You are awesome."
Story Most Underappreciated By The Universe:
ruby axes, silver shoes, Claire/Samuel
I have a hard time seeing this one objectively, so it might not be as good or as bad as I think it is. But I spent so much brain power trying to characterize Samuel correctly, and this fic was me exploring my new interpretation of him.
Most Fun:
rain on my umbrella (some call it noise), Ilana
I think I poured everything I think is awesome about Ilana into this fic. Her backstory has always been one of my most favorite things to write about.
Most Disappointing:
he had no alibi, Ben/Kate
I rewrote this concept a couple times; I liked the metaphor but it wasn't really working as a story. I only finished it so I could get over it and write better stuff instead.
Most Sexy:
Whisper So Sweetly, Jacob/Ilana
One of my early fics, and I've had to change my entire head-canon for their relationship, but I still love this fic. I love the idea of Ilana being a dancer.
Hardest To Write:
Oh hi, Lost HoHoHo. I like the finished product, but I wrote maybe four thousand words of crap before something worked. I was so stressed, afraid I was going to give up (I opted out of a fic exchange last year), afraid I was gonna disappoint my recipient. But I survived, and my head didn't actually explode, so that's good.
Most Unintentionally Telling:
I don't know, I think anything you write is telling. Your world-views, opinions on people, which characters you are most crazy-obsessed with. ;)
Choice Lines:
Aaron dreams of knives and rabbits and gasps for air.
Walt dreams of bullets and broken glass and doesn't even flinch.
Ji Yeon dreams of nothing and wakes up screaming.
(
run through the grass, over the stones, down to the sea )
"Once a Shephard, always a Shephard," she mimics. "Remember that, kiddo."
(
sparks fly from her fingertips )
And if she remembers kissing, she can't remember this, sweet and painful as Ben breathes life back into her.
(
fills my head up and gets louder )
he's not Adam and she's not Eve
(
blood and tears, they were here first )
My name's not Abaddon, he tells her, and she laughs.
-
My name's not Matthew, he tells himself, and nobody laughs.
(
made of ticky tacky and they all look the same )
