I seriously debated having a conversation between them, and I actually wrote part of one. But it was super-girly. And it made me feel lame. So I cut it out.

I'm glad you thought it was true to TOS. It definitely could have been either or for me, but I wasn't confident enough in my knowledge of TOS to actually label it as such.

When it comes to emotions, Jim's self-esteem is worth chicken-shit... at least in my mind...

I think they might have worked it out eventually, but it definitely may have taken longer (i.e. end of the mission or something ridiculous) without Uhura nudging them in the right direction.
