Forgetful

There is a difference between being Forgetful
And being Oblivious.

The end effect, mind,
Is generally the same.

Vergess women have had a tendency towards misfortune in love for as long back as anyone cares to consider. Some would say that itis just exaggeration, and they might well be correct. But, when you are raised to live up to impossible standards, you will find that you can often achieve heretofore unfathomable levels.

And besides that, there must be a genetic component somewhere. Even the ones adopted out seem to have the unfortunate tendency to fall for someone who will love them like the moon and stars, and burn them fiercer than the sun.

Caught up in the escapades of later generations, no one ever seems to think about the women who came before them. Suffered the same trappings, and boiled away their souls in the same way. Advice goes unheeded, and help ignored.

For example, there is Kalte, who would give anything to ensure that her daughter does not follow in her footsteps and find herself a living husk torn with regret over a dead body that she should have, could have and did not save.

And there is Cen, who worries that this love she has will destroy her, and destroy her son by extension- though she ought not fear. The men of the lineage tend to do well for themselves. Dananjay, after all, is quite a successful young businessman.

But there are ones further back than that. Far, far back. There is Moira, who mothered six children only to have each one fall ill, and eventually die. But that loss was hardly enough, and she watcher the man she loved drift off into the arms of another woman, coming back later and later each night, never saying a word. They are too civilised to mention it to eachother.

There is Carolyn, who must wonder each and every day if that Ange woman's children aren't half identical to her own, because while she wants to believe Siraj wouldn't do that, want to believe it with every fibre, she isn't that stupid.

There is Elizabeth who stares day after day out to the ocean refusing to admit the truth because there is no reason to believe anything she hasn't seen herself. And she hasn't seen him.

Adele and Lorelee are destined to squabble for decades over the same boy until he dies and they are left with no life built up, on a lifetime of hatred and animosity.

In the end, what happens to the end of the line is nothing special. They are merely fulfilling destiny.

permanent changes, kalte vergess
