1) Previously in the "random facts about..." family I enjoy so much:
Vin Diesel,
Chuck Norris,
Jack Bauer. Now:
Markku Uusipaavalniemi, the captain of the Finnish curling team. No, really. And yes, that is a ridiculously long last name.
2) I've kept wanting to say something about Friday's Finland vs. Russia hockey semifinal since, well, Friday, but. [flails] I won't lie, I'm so lame that when the game was over and a couple of the players were being interviewed, there were tears of pure joy. I mean,
come on: The combined population of Sweden (9 million) and Finland (5 million) is less than metropolitan New York City, yet they will play for the gold while the big boys -- Canada, the United States, Russia and the Czechs -- all sit out. Finland has beaten all of those teams in the tournament.
Also,
this whole ESPN thing pretty much made me want to weep when I read it yesterday. One Saku Koivu quote I want to remember forever: "The way this team is working to protect the net and helping out teammates, it's probably been the best that I've ever seen. Step by step, we're getting more confident, and right now the puck is going in for us." Oh, my heart.
In a way, although winning today and getting gold would be incredibly amazing (especially because that would mean winning against Sweden), I will be happy either way. Sure, I'll be disappointed, but silver = amazing, too.
3) If you've ever seen even a couple of minutes of The O.C., please tell me you've already seen
the best spoof ever.
Um. It's kind of obvious I'm just wasting time until 3pm when it's time for hockey, isn't it?
