Merlin is too far away.

The arrow is too deep in Arthur's side, it wrenches at his insides, and he screams. It's too deep. This time it's too deep.

He thinks about Merlin, thinks about how Merlin has always protected him, was always risking his own life to ensure Arthur's survival.
This time Merlin's not there in time, but Arthur doesn't blame him. When a man dies, he should accept his fate, and realise that he is a part of nature, and remember that his life was borrowed for a short while, in the never-ending current of time.

When it's your time to die, you die.

He thinks of Merlin's golden eyes as magic rushes through him; how the air seems to crackle around him without sound. He thinks of Merlin's unfortunate ears, his clumsy mannerism, and the way his smiles always touch his eyes. The wound doesn't hurt any-more, and he knows it's a bad sign, so he thinks of Merlin's kisses, because it soothes him.

When Merlin finds him he is no-longer there, but it's okay. Arthur knows Merlin will be okay.
