the slightly stooped old lady was very dignified. her tone and demeanor exuding old school decorum, though at that very moment she was just slightly shame-faced...

'excuse me dear? it tells me that i'm not allowed to borrow until i've paid my fine'
well, if you'd just like to come this way, i'll sort that out for you now. do you know how much your fine is?
'no, i just returned both books, they were both overdue'
aah, here we go... if you just wait here, i'll get your change for you

by the time i've come back from the cash register, she is resting on the seat at the desk. dignified as ever, but with the slightest hint of a blush

'i do know i can call. i don't quite know why i don't. i just don't seem to think of it'
it's ok really, if we were to be perfectly honest, you'd find it's the librarians that make the worst library patrons

my conspiratorial whisper takes her slightly aback - and then she starts smirking...

'oh! you've discovered my secret then! that i used to be a librarian myself!'

by this stage, my face is lit with a full-blown grin...

yes dear, it's your tardiness is returning our books to us that completely gives you away :)

her full deep chuckle matches my own as the lunch-busy library sweeps us both away

(net)work, stoop stories
