There is this dude that I went to law school with, and worked with for a while last year. He's one of those always-has-to-appear-perfect kind of people. Perfect clothes, hair, body, car, house, grades, job, etc, etc.
Late last summer, rumors started going around that his beautiful girlfriend was pregnant. Pregnancy out of wedlock= not perfect. So, this guy only told one or two people. There was a very fast and informal wedding at his parents house. At that point, everyone knew about the pending baby.
Long story short, the bastard child was born over the weekend. This guy only told the same couple of people here at the office, who naturally proceeded to tell everyone else.
What bothers me is that this guy is so worried about what other people think about him, that he let that fear override a defining moment of his life. I don't even know if he'll put a picture of her on his desk.
If there's one thing I learned from going down in flames on the first bar exam, is that it's best to air your dirty laundry. Sure, it's embarrassing and difficult- but we are all screwed up, we are all going to fail, and nothing is gained from pretending you aren't.
