Trust in fate.

Two weeks after not getting the position at the hospital, I got a call from my recruiter. "Would you like to go back?" she asked in a querulous voice. It would be at the campus where I'd missed the opportunity, for Chris, the supervisor who wanted to hire the other people.

After I accepted a 9 day engagement, she thanked me for being gracious. I don't generally hold grudges. It was pleasant enough, I got along with everyone including the guys who made it in. They were friends, after all.

I'm now 2 months extended from that 9 day contract. Chris informed me earlier this week that he had advised his boss to do whatever they could to make sure I stick around because I do good work. I've already got another extension lined up for next month, with the promise of additional 6 after that where I actually get a promotion.

I've learned more doing project work than I did on desktop support. I have more opportunity to move around and advance as well. I get to add "IT project coordinator" to my resume next year.

Once again, fate or whatever has intervened on my behalf and held me back from what I wanted in order to hand me what I needed.
