Of.. good ear things

Went to this Khalil Fong concert with auntie yesterday night. I never was very much a fan, and knew just a handful of songs (just 1 hand). Even knowing he was a talented singer/songwriter, I was surprised when I found myself purchasing tickets for his concert. Was even more surprised that Auntie agreed to come with me! Really glad I have an ONOF like auntie who gamely sits with me through most of my (sometimes dubious) performance-watching choices... So off we went, and I'm glad we did. He really is a guy who totally feels his music and somehow - I think we felt it too. Sadly there were a number of empty seats in the house in the front - it was quite apparent when he did the audience talky thing and the cameras panned across. I say "audience talky" - but he's a pretty reticent guy, so there was nothing of the "wow I love Singapore, do you love me" sort of spiel that some performers throw out. He was more of the "people tell me singapore audiences are pretty calm, and I'm a pretty calm guy, so we can be...calm together" - awkward silence type one liners. Cute.
And his band! woah. So big band.. one trumpet, one sax, one keytar, one keyboard, one rythmn and bass guitar and one super hardworking guy on drums. Khalil himself played both the piano (the mics on that.. quite bad. When the drums came in I couldn't hear what he was playing. pity) and the guitar (which ended up not having any sound at one time, and he did the wahwah by..mouth.."wahwahwahwah". heh). They were all just having a ball on stage, and er kind of forgetting that they were playing for an audience (what empty seats? pfft). It was great! Such a musically tight band, and I'm really glad to have had a chance to listen to this great music live.
So after the first two big-band type songs (eh Star Vista. Y U so many lights? U wan to blind us all is it), Khalil did some covers. Auntie identified a song by GD (level up, tee) in there; a Brian Mcknight song "one", mashed up with Jay Chou's "an1 jing4". And a couple more covers which I forget..after the perf Auntie said that she felt nostalgia for the time when Jay Chou was just Jay Chou who made good music, rather than cowboy Jay now. Or Magic Jay. Or Director Jay.
I hope Khalil never changes.
Meanwhile - on to acquire his music ! (by free means, heh)
