SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS, though I guess that sort of goes without saying.
I did these chapter-by-chapter. YES I'M A TARD. And yes, I actually wrote internet speak into my notes. I have no life, simple as that. These are not too intelligent or deep, their just silly little first reactions.
Chapter 1: Voldie is so deliciously, amusingly, awesome, stereotypically evil. Malfoys very intriguing at this moment. Bellatrix = Fangirl Number one. ♥
Chapter 2: Albus/Aberforth is the new Sam/Dean, I'm telling you. Wincest, watch your back. These bros got wands.
Chapter 3: Rowling biggin' up Dudley/Harry. Dudley's way of saying "I love you". Awww. Awesome.
Chapter 4: OMFG.
Chapter 5: Twins ♥ ♥ ♥ Moody :(
Chapter 6: OMG I ♥ RON SO MUCH, EEEEE. And their Horcrux hunt holiday & Mrs Weasley is feels a bit parallel to me and mum and hopeful eventual New York trip. This amuses me.
Chapter 7: Ahhh, Ron's dating guide, ROFLMAO. I ♥ him so much. And shippiness in this chapter I actually REALLY enjoyed. Eee. Alby's will, aww. He was such an awesome loony.
Chapter 8: THE WEDDING. Luna's dad OMFG. Luna!! Xenophilius - I love what the name implies. Intriguing, chapter, what with Luna's father and Grindelwald and Albus' past. And the last line OMG.
Chapter 9: Eeeeyikes. Thank god everything turned out allright, though.
Chapter 10: Aww, I luvs house elves. Poor Kreacher. And AWW, Lily's letter and wee!Harry on a broomstick. Cute overload.
Chapter 11: Remus WTF!!! No, seriously, WTF.
Chapter 12: Okay. DE's running Ministry is seriously super-freaky. Unreal. I'm sort of glad I've never been into dark characters by rule. This makes me wonder how the DE 'apologists' of the fandom will take it.
Chapter 13: Argh, Umbitch, worse than ever - didn't think it was possible. Loved the action, though. So 'S' stands for Selwyn, eh.
Chapter 14: Poor Ronniekins.
Chapter 15: Noooooo!!!!! ;___________; The Trio CANNOT break up like this OMFG. I refuse to allow this. WAH.
Chapter 16: Why is Ron not there with them? Why is life so unfair? Wah wah doom angst death angst more death. Give me Ron or I'll cut you, stupidass book. I mean, yeah, I find it fascinating but Christ. This is so unfair.
Chapter 17: To quote movie!Ron: "Bloody hell." Who is blond-haired merry thief, besides, you know, a person I TOTALLY want to slash Dumbledore with.
Chapter 18: OMG. OMG. 1) This is sooooo Harry/Dumbledore. Emily R U READING?? "He loved you." ;____; 2) Ahhhh, Alby so had an angsty twisted gay love affair with Gellert Grindelwald. YOU KNOW IT HAPPENED DON'T EVEN TRY.
Chapter 19: Hahahahhaha, Harry "avantoui" (this is a Finnish thing, basically swimming in the ice cold water during wintertime, in an actual lake/sea/whatever that has frozen on the surface). And Ron SAVES HIM OMFG. ♥ ♥ ♥ Best.Chapter.Yet. ♥ It's so Ron/Harry BFF and Trio-4-life and Hermione is all "I hate you, you bleedin' idiot" at Ron and omfg it's PERFECT.
Chapter 20: Mmm, Lovegood. And dun dun dunnnnnn, the sign is that of the Deathly Hallows. WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED. :D
Chapter 21: Dad's sudden request for a game of Monopoly tore me away from the book in the middle of this AWESOME chapter. Very, very intriguing. Aww, Luna, I hope she's all right.
Chapter 22: Oh, our poor little newly obsessed Harry, wanting to become the Lord of Death Itself. So cute.
Chapter 23: Damn. Just ...damn. I can't believe both Wormtail and Dobby just dropped dead in that one chapter. Goddammit, Jo. Play more Minefield, kill less characters.
Day 1 thoughts: Heh, I fell asleep in the middle of the Wandmaker (chapter 24). Thus far, I really enjoy this book. Given, I'm too into the plot to look at the prose with a critical eye. There are the usual Rowling characteristics that I tend to forgive her for the amazing overall story she's giving us. I love the questioning of certain good guys' goodness, small grayness here and there morally. But in the end, evil IS evil and good IS good because that's just Harry Potter for you. I love the difficulties the Trio is facing and have faced, the strains in their friendship and how they still stick together. I love Ron/Hermione (I wish Rowling would give us, R/Hr making out scene, though, H/G already got one!). I understand Harry-Voldie mind connection is TOO convinient but I don't mind thus far.
Chapter 24: Though I must say, Harry's random being-Voldie moments are a little TOO convinient sometimes, especially when not even separated by italics or anything. And oh, Grindelwald/Dumbledore sooooooo OTP.
Chapter 25: Aww, I always liked goblins. So tiny and funnyfaced. Hmm. Well, let's hope this works itself out.
Chapter 26: Damn, that was cool. I luvs me some adventure & "läheltä piti" (Finnish for 'that was close') situations. Shame about the sword, though.
Chapter 27: Oddly short, mellow-ish chapter. Well, apart from Voldie finding out, of course. I'm beginning to wonder how I should react to Harry's convinient mind-connection with Voldemort. A part of me wants to question it, a part of me just wants to accept it as a storytelling vehicle and move on.
Chapter 28: Aberforth I LOVE YOU. ♥ ♥
Chapter 29: Yay DA! Damn, the business over at Hogwarts is enormously vicious, though. Is it the fandom that made me think it would never TRULY be that bad or...?
Chapter 30: Oh God, they're actually going to battle. Proper war battle. And the mood for the battle is a bit too jolly for my taste, should be more grim somehow. Fucking Gryffindors.
Chapter 31: Damn, I wish I could WRITE keymash because that's mostly what's on my mind at the moment. Eeeeeyikes. (Or, since I'm typing this right now: sdfgsjfhgsjdgfjdsgfjdsgfdsfjsdgfj)
Chapter 32: LOL at Voldie chilling at Shrieking Shack, probably sipping tea, watching Muggles wrestle each other in a cage (he does so love it when they hurt each other), occasionally switching channels to Pimp My Ride (who can resist that jolly feller ZXhibit?). Yeah, I'm on crack. I do so ♥ Voldie. Except he's so cruel, even killing his most faithful servants. Aww, Voldie, way to dampen a fangirl's crush. Snape's killed but there's so much left to know about him, hmmm....
Chapter 33: OMFG Lily/Snape BFF ♥ And eeeee, two fandom theories proven - Snape killed DD on DD's orders AND Harry is a Horcrux of a kind. And Snape/Lily OMFG such OTP-ery since childhood. James who? :((
Chapter 34: Ahhh, the boy who lived to die. So sweet. (Add; I loved how Harry subjected to his fate, was ready to die etc etc.)
Chapter 35: Awww, such awesome weirdness. Albus style. Emo!Albus :( Hug him, Harry! He could use it. Albus you are not a failure.
Chapter 36: Aww, Voldie was so scared. The end was sort of appropriate, though I wouldn't have minded Harry doing down as angsty hero who accepts death as his fate. A bit anticlimactic but you know, sort of hot. And LOL, Molly said 'bitch'.
EPILOGUE: OMFG, what is it with the people in this fucking book series naming their kids after DEAD PEOPLE???? Especially their DEAD PARENTS. I read about eskimos doing this but it's attached to their core spiritual beliefs, so it's not just meant to be honoringly cutesy. Kind of odd to me, to be honest, especially Lily as I don't know, something about having A MOTHER and A DAUGHTER of the same name. I guess life really did fuck you up, Harry. Albus Severus I can totally forgive Harry & Ginny for, though, as it's just cuuuuuuuuuute and Albus as a kid is just cuuuuuuuuuuuuute and omg, Albus Severus. I already heart that kid.
(And like, no offence to those of you named after grandparents but still. LILY. JAMES. Come the fuck on, some creativity would be nice.)
ALL IN ALL: Very satisfying a read. So much backstory, so much excitement, enough shippiness and while I certainly noticed the flaws of both this book AND Rowling's writing, they didn't extremely distract me from completely loving the story. In the end, even in this simple black and white story there were some realy fascinating characters woven and while the feminist in me is perhaps a tad disappointed that all of these characters were male (I'm talking Harry, Dumbledore, Snape, Voldemort) it doesn't lessen my interest in them. I love the exploration of the flawedness of these characters, their strengths and weaknesses, the conclusion that things aren't as simple as they seem to be - and even dark characters as Malfoys are redeemed because what they truly value most is family.
I loved Dumbledore's past, his admitting of his flaws. I love Snape/Lily, the bond that stayed eternal though Snape sort of messed it up. I love all the things I already loved, the friendship of the Trio, Ron, the rest of the Weasleys, Luna, Neville, all these heart-warming kids that grew up with us readers. I'll have to wait a while, re-read and then process this book to say whether it's a fave out of them all - probably not - but regardless, I think it was worthy an ending.
...yeah, but.. Or a List of Criticisms
- Remus, Tonks, Remus/Tonks. You know, I just didn't care in HBP and I cared even less in here. That they both died, that they had a kid, that they married, that Remus had further "oh noes I iz werewolf" angst. You know, I just didn't care.
- Was it just me or was Hermione crying like, every five pages? She was strong, too, but it's clear she's probably the mentally least strong of the three. It was, well, not sure, rubbed me the wrong way a little.
- I love Voldie in all his stereotypical evilness but it was a bit rofflesome at times.
- But so was Harry. Aww, that's why they're so similar. The use of Resurrection Stone at the end, and like, his parents and Sirius and Remus? Yeah, hi, cheese - did you bring along the wine?
- So they all got cute kids in the end. Awesome. But what do they DO??? Where do they live?? What happened to Luna??? Why didn't Harry marry her?? So many questions unanswered that I need answered for my fics and stuff.
Also, in light of this recent awesome OOTP movie, I kept thinking about DH!movie version. They spent like half of the movie in Polyjuice!costume. Roflmao, sorry Dan, Rupert and Emma. No go! And the league of Harrys, too. So Matrix 3.
And now I'm off to read flist and your posts on this book. :)
