i know you know i'm not telling the truth...

I jumped head-first into a fandom today and it is proving out to be awesome. The show's called Psych, there are 7 episodes out there, it's funny, it's hot, it's slashy and it's just a really fun thing to watch & get into.

Basic gist of the show? "Fake psychic, real detectives." as the tag line goes, I believe. Shawn Spencer has an unbelievable photographic memory that allows him to pretend he's psychic, and as situations develop he ends up dragging along his best friend Gus. Gus doesn't really want to get involved with anything, since he still has a sensible job, but his inner geek of just about everything can't help being drawn in on the cases Shawn works on. Then there's Shawn's dad who has a nick for teaching his son all sorts of lessons, and the cops with whose cases Shawn ends up meddling with and (surprise surprise!) solving. This doesn't make Detective Lassiter happy, though his partner Juliet is more than open to Shawn's assistance.

I knew within 10 minutes into the pilot I was going to like the show. Just the whole general gimmick of Shawn spotting details and the way they lead to assumptions and er, resolutions for the cases. But it's not just that, I immediately enjoyed Shawn's character, as well, just his whole attitude and laid-backness and occasionally even the fact he kind of won't shut up. I love the way he ends up in the situation, trying to do a good thing by helping out the cops, ending up a suspect, then being forced to pretending he's a psychic and fooling the department reception lady who's into er, spiritual things. Clever clever.

And I like the whole Gus/Shawn dynamic. For the longest time I was like "Slash? What slash?" because I just saw them as these two BFF's who'd known each other for a veeeery long time and could never drop each other. But that's okay because I also love that, just the way Gus goes with Shawn no matter how much he's all "I don't like this" and he's just rolling his eyes when Shawn pretends to have another one of his little freak out moments of psychic visions (which I love, by the way, no matter how dumb and embarrassing they can end up being). Then when the slashiness steps in (Gus' deep-seated jealousy for a boy-cat! Shower for two! "What's a little naked spooning between two friends, right Gus?") it's even more fun and games, really. If you haven't noticed, I'm really into the whole "best friends form slashy duet" thing.

Oh but the fun doesn't stop there. I find all Shawn/Lassiter scenes full of teh funneh. Those interactions are just priceless. Oh, and if we want to talk slashiness, let's talk "Get off my lap." Or the random violent grabbing. This fic. Okay, the last one not exactly canon but really good and I just wanted to throw it in there somewhere.

Then there's het. Sweet, forgotten het. Because remember fangirls and slashers, Shawn likes girls. No, really. Seriously, he does! It's just a coincidence that he ends up only being attracted to girls who did it. Guilty girls, criminals. It's like, one minute he's smooching and flirting and next the girls are cuffed and on their way to the court-room. And who's left! Oh, hi Gus! Gus who cannot stop talking about his best friend in his awesome blog. Seriously cool stuff there, by the way, including Gus' geeking out on Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Quote: In addition, you can sometimes gain an advantage by getting into your opponent's head, and making a few seemingly casual remarks such as, "hey man, it's good day for paper", or the classic bluff "Nothing beats rock."

But be warned, the psychological angle has its limitations, so don't become too reliant on it. In the words of 2003 World Rock Paper Scissors Champion Rob Krueger, "It's best not to show your hand until you have to show your hand."

But hey, back to het. Because there's Juliet, who reminds me of Alicia Silverstone, only less annoying and more sympathetic. Very cute. I dig her. And while I think she and Shawn would actually be kind of cute, I seem to sort of want her together with Lassiter. Don't ask, it's just a weird thing. Their rule-book scene? AWESOME. Plus their little scenes where he's just this total asshole and she's probably just thinking to herself, "Wow, my partner's a total asshole." and probably also "Wonder what that previous woman saw in him?" and well, he IS separated from his wife and cannot afford to fuck up again but but. I don't know, maybe I just find Lassiter lovable in his assholeness myself. Uptight son of a bitch. ♥

I'm sorry, my brain totally switched on the angsty het mode again. This happens at times. Because a lot of people are doing the slash thing with Gus and Shawn and hey, I love that, I think it's hot and fantastic and everything, but I probably just wouldn't be good at it myself.

Anyway, yeah, Shawn's sort of too much of an apparent ladiesman for me to think he might actually end up together with Juliet. He'll just be hitting on ladies and then his ladies go to jail and he'll end up drinking smoothies with Gus in the sunset. And Jules will help him help them with the cases but that's about it. I think. Then again, seven episodes in, hard to say what's in store in the future.

Oh yeah, and then there's Daddy Spencer. His scenes with Shawn are actually quite funny very often but not exactly the high point of the entire show to me.

One thing I dislike? The squinty-eye thing and highlighting the artefacts and details Shawn spots. YEAH. WE GET IT. If they just zoomed in on stuff and showed shots of his eyes, we'd get it already. Underestimating the viewers, -1 point! Also, the Psych Out moments? Funny at times (episode 7 omg!!) but sometimes they just escape me and I don't get them.

Oh well, bed now. Must re-watch tomorrow. Yaaaay.
