Fractals of Bangkok

Aug 29, 2014 22:38

There is something akin to fractal in structures symbolizing power or religion in Thailand. Same motif, same shape or pattern repeated over and over, but in a different scale, with slight variations, slightly altered and repeated again and again.

This combinations of similar shapes, but on a different scale eventually confusing viewer, disrupting perception of own size. Steps that are too big for human or doorways repeated in different sizes. Same shape of roof repeated several times, but in different scale. All this repetition is confusing, but not oppressing. I only felt desire to explore it more, look closer and keep admiring it from various angles and distances, giving contemplative mood, but not dictating.

Western religious architecture carries much more narrative, no doubt.
