Clouds in B/W

Did you know that up as late as 1930 clouds would not be rendered on photographs? Until 1873 it was by all means impossible!
Until 1900 all mass-produced film was typically orthochromatic, not sensitive to red and oversensitive to blue. The details in all other colours would be recorded at exposures much longer than that needed for a sky, leading to an overexposed sky and dissaperance of clouds.
Between 1873 and 1900 only scientific photography would be experimenting with panchromatic film or orthochromatics with shifted colour sensitivity. The panchromatic film only became widely adopted from 1930.
Yet another help when trying to determine the age of an old photograph.

time, film
