A couple days ago my favorite faithful old pair of jeans finally gave way. I was playing with Annie and zip, the knee went out. It made me genuinely sad. These jeans (and their twin pair) have been the best pair of jeans ever. I've gotten several new pairs of jeans which developed holes in inexplicable places within months. I think I only have one pair now that is completely intact (this pair's twin.) Time to go shopping.

I don't go shopping for clothes very often.

In fact, I try to avoid it. I only go shopping when I have something specific in mind, and today's mission: denim. I went to JCPenney's (braving the summer weekend crowd) since that's where I got these last time, and I was shocked by what I saw: Apparently it's COOL now to have holes in jeans. Racks upon racks of jeans were bleached, faded, shredded, and torn... in most cases, in places that made no sense to me, like on the thigh right below the pocket. Sometimes the ripped parts were outlined with decorative trim. The gross amount of faux-shredded clothing led me to the suspicion that having actual, genuinely-torn jeans will probably still be tacky.
Grunge is so out, but $44 professionally cheese-grated clothing is the hottest thing. How does that make sense?
