Rambling, o joy!
I'm currently in the process of doing my first Angel the Series rewatch in like five years, and the thing that's struck me the most this time around (other than The Evolutionary Madness of Cordelia Chase's Hair, and the fact that this show is awesome) is just how poignant this pairing is. I vaguely remembered it as a brief sexy fling, so watching their storyline this time around totally caught me off-guard. The feelings! The conflict! The nuance! Stephanie Romanov's heartwrenchingly earnest face!
This song choice is a little bit weird, on account of it being all folksy and wistful. When I first started thinking, 'Ooh, these two would be fun to fanvid!' I was considering songs that were a bit darker and sexier, but as their arc became more about the feelings and less about the sex I found myself wanting to do something sort of stripped down and simple. (Again, Stephanie Romanov's face -- specifically, the way she looks at Wesley in "Habeas Corpses" -- is totally to blame there. Oh my heart!) I've always thought the lyrics in this song are so striking and weird and beautiful, and while I associated it with Spike/Buffy for a long time, it randomly hit me like a ton of Wes/Lilahy bricks.
Unfortunately, youtube has decided that it is also the one song in the world that it is going to block EVERYWHERE, so hopefully this vimeo business works out!

Grey Matter
(Jewel)
I hate you
I love you
Leave
Don't go away
I can't decide if I like your face
Or if I wish it would stray
You're a child but you're malicious
You're sweet, but don't remember my name
Heads I win
Tails I'm lost
Love equals pain
I am drifting without an anchor
Through your ambiguous region
Strange continent immune to all reason
And I'm flattered by your grey matter
Inside my skin, I feel your tongue
It's telling me I'm dirty
And licking my bones
A scrape against silence
A knife against a plate
Makes the sound of need on hate
I am drifting without an anchor
Through your ambiguous region
Strange continent immune to all reason
And I'm flattered by your grey matter
And I do not understand why a woman can't just love a man
You're amusing
You're a real cool show
With your meat hooks and barbed wire carnival
You got moth holes in your pocket
You got moth holes in your soul
From too many false teeth and greasy flashbulbs
And I am drifting without an anchor
Through your ambiguous region
Strange continent immune to all reason
And I'm flattered
And I'm battered
By your grey matter
