I wasn't going to write anything on the Emmys, but then a very dear, sick friend begged me from his deathbed to weigh in, and how could I deny his dying request? So here goes ( Read more... )

Linda Ellerbe is still alive? Who woulda thunk it?

What? I always knew she'd outlive Clarissa and Doug. Linda Ellerbee is one tough bitch.

Ugly Betty is fucking awful and I hope everyone who likes it gets AIDS. Yeah I said it. Linda Ellerbee is my Jesus. The Riches is my favorite new show by a longshot. Definitely worth the DVD rental or purchase. Planet Earth is unfathomably brilliant, and also deserving of any award it gets. I will say, though, that Penn & Teller's show is surprisingly hilarious. And finally, Battlestar will be waiting for you, when you're ready. It'll be on HD discs of one format or another soon, too!

Finally, if you get the Discovery Channel, there's a show called Man vs. Wild that's positively ludicrous. It's a wonderful waste of an hour.

Oh, and the pilot of Heroes was even worse than the rest of the show. Which is saying something.

So much so I heard that that was actually the second pilot they made - and that it was the last thing to get picked up, only because all other pilots had been made and cancelled. Or something like that.

Heroes is really hit or miss. I think its popularity ended up hurting the second half of the season. It settled into familiarity all too easily and stopped really working on the characters and story. There was one truly great episode that focused only on a few characters, including my beloved cheerleader, called "Company Man." These are the kinds of episodes the show needs to be artistically satisfying. (The risks and unusual structure of this episode reminded me of Buffy, which is a much better and more consistent version of this kind of show.)

Basically this show could really use me on its writing staff. Actually, in charge of its writing staff. Because I would whip them into shape and not them get away with all the trite stuff that bogs down all the moments that are really fun and exciting.

Yeah I will catch up with all of the above. Someday. Ugly Betty is...what it is. Not AIDS-worthy, but no masterpiece. A goofy diversion.

i know you don't watch Lost, but I think that the Sopranos having 3 VERY good episodes nominated for writing will split the vote. The Lost episode nominated was the season 3 final and it had people dying and new discoveries and a giant twist that changed the whole show, so i think it will win. if it doesnt, then i think "Made in America" (last ep of the sopranos) will get it, just because the last few minutes have been so talked about.

personally i would go with the Lost episode, then "Kennedy and Heidi", which is a sopranos episode that completely through me off of what i thought about tony. (i dont want to give too much away so i wont say more)

Yeah I still haven't seen Season 6. But I guess it's nice to know that The Sopranos didn't end for me! I kinda like watching TV after it's over, it's more like a movie, working toward a definite ending.

I do want to watch that episode of Lost. I think I have it on DVD as a screener.

It always seems to me that I watch a lot of television. However, when the Emmy nominations come out, I invariably realize that is probably not true. There are tons of things that get nominated that I have never seen. Perhaps I spend all of my time in front of the tv just flipping through channels, and never really watching anything.

I had high hopes for Heroes, but ended up disappointed. They had some great, unique, unpredictable touches early in the season. It seemed that, as the show gained in popularity, they began to pander to the masses and lost a lot of what was making the show special. It will be interesting to see how Season 2 goes.

Whenever you decide to pull a coup d'etat and take over writing one of these shows, I'll grab a pitchfork and join the mob to rush the studio. :)

Channel surfing is the devil! Stop now.

I literally never, ever do that.

I agree about Heroes. I would write for that show. Not many other shows I really care to write for.
