For all you diehard fans of my column out there (...Bueller?), here is the "columnist's cut" of my piece this month in its entirety. (American Idol provided with such a goldmine, it went long...and even this doesn't have everything.) Also I know many of you are too lazy to click on links...you know who you are.

You're right about the Underground Railroad statement...most in fact dressed up as raspberries, or, at the very least, maraschino cherries.
Just a thot! :)

That was really kind of interesting to be able to compare the full and column versions. I assume that you are in charge of the editing. While the full piece contains some nice elements, in the end I would have to say the edited peice in the column reads a little better and still packs sufficient "punch." Perhaps the ability to effectively edit is the real talent of a writer. :)

I actually don't do the editing...the editor does. I agree, the printed version flows better, and that's why she's the editor. By the time I'm done writing it I'm in no condition to look at it objectively so I send it off knowing she will cut it down if it's run long (it usually has). In this case, there are a couple small things I probably wish had stayed in, but overall, once I send it out, I am divorced from it. I often don't re-read it when it's printed, at least not for awhile. Once it leaves my control it's just out there and there's nothing I can do about it, so I prefer not to think about it.

It's probably true for most writers that they are good editors, but not good editors for themselves. That's true of me, too...for something like this it's usually nice to have someone else standing by with the scissors, because after spending several hours working on it, I am not ready to cut anything out yet.
