Summary: When he was younger, things were simple.

The idea that he, Draco Malfoy, would be or even could be envious of someone like her is complete preposterous. Yet he finds that he is envious of her in many ways, although not in the ways that most people would suspect. He could care less that Hermione Granger is one-third of the precious Golden Trio or that she is Harry Potter’s best friend, even though Draco suspects that they are even closer friends than Harry is with Ron. Draco doesn’t even care that she routinely and regularly beats him academically. And just as he knows that she is destined for a bright future, he knows that the Malfoy name may become tarnished but his family will always wield power.
Instead he finds that he is envious of Hermione Granger because her life is largely uncomplicated, especially in comparison to his own. There is no doubt in his mind that she has never once been tempted by the darkness that surrounds him. Draco imagines that she came out of the womb knowing right from wrong and made a moral choice to follow the path of lightness before she could walk. She has never been faced with the choices that Draco has faced all of his life.
When he was younger, things were simple: his world revolved around his father and it didn’t matter that his father believed in out-dated ideals or that he worshiped a lunatic who wanted to destroy their world. Yet as he grew older and saw the folly in his father’s beliefs and ways, Draco realized that he was faced with a terrible choice. He could either continue to follow his father despite what he knew to be true or he could turn his back on his father, his family and everyone he cares about and throw his lot with Potter.
It’s not an easy choice and Draco knows that the longer he delays in making his decision, the higher the chance that his decision will be made for him by his father and the Dark Lord. Yet he finds himself staring wistfully at Hermione when no one is looking and he feels full of longing, loathing and envy. And he wonders if the choice was already stolen away from him when he hears Pansy mutter something darkly about the Golden Trio.
