DESCRIPTION. Brian is about 5’5” tall, with a skinny build since he doesn’t get much exercise but also doesn’t eat that much (sometimes he forgets to eat because he’s busy working) so it evens out, more or less. He has shortish blonde hair, green-blue eyes and fair skin. When he is wearing the St. Jude’s uniform, it is very neat, to the point of impeccable - but outside of school, on non-school days (since he doesn’t take the uniform OFF after school unless there’s a reason), he just wears whatever’s clean and handy, and occasionally forgets things like the fact that shirts need buttoning up. Unless the loose shirt happens to get in the way of whatever he’s working on, in which case it will likely be taken off. His t-shirts tend to have slogans of some kind on them, because darn it he’s being individual over here, but... what exactly those slogans are is hardly consistent.

PERSONALITY. Brian is a bit of a distant, socially maladjusted loner, coming off as cold and analytical due to both his secluded upbringing and his startling intelligence. He often has internal conflicts over his desire to make friends and live something approaching a normal life, as he is well aware that his intelligence makes him far superior to most “normal” people and would make any friendships difficult. He also completely fails to understand how normal people work, as he understands cold logic and computers far better, but he rarely admits this even to himself. As a result, he is often snarky, unless he’s speaking to someone who has, somehow, managed to earn his admiration - traits he admires are not, perhaps surprisingly, limited to intelligence, but also conviction in the following of one’s principles, strength of character, and an ability to unfailingly know and do the right thing. These are things he feels are lacking in himself, due in part to his family’s history. He prefers practical experiments and inventing to pure thought exercises, and whilst this has resulted in various useful little gadgets, he also has a tendency to perform experiments without worrying about the consequences, which is just asking for trouble. Occasionally he gets so caught up in his experiments that he will forget to eat or sleep, but only rarely will he forget to attend school. It helps that he can get through most of his classes whilst sleep deprived and half-starved, of course.
HISTORY. Brian’s family is descended from a long line of aggressively ambitious conquerors stretching back to the royal family of the Vandals. Over the centuries, their ancestors stockpiled dangerous knowledge, but also developed a desire to become more peaceful and live within society rather than trying to take it over. To this end, they became secluded and insular, dedicating themselves - both the current generation of the time and their children, and their children’s children, and so on - to the pursuit of knowledge and peaceful contemplation. They stressed the distancing and suppression of emotions, as this helped quell the desire for conquest and control of the kingdoms of humanity. As such, they founded several traditions to help forcibly maintain a distance from the outside world; for example, everyone has a “secret”, family-only name - Brian’s is Quentin Duc.
Even within his family, Brian was somewhat of a loner - his mother, Briony, relinquished his upbringing to the household staff not long after he was born, as she herself was too preoccupied with mental exercises and was wary of becoming emotionally attached. She gave the staff strict orders not to foster emotional attachment in her son, both as part of the familial traditions and out of a tiny surge of possessiveness - if she could not be the focus of his childhood attentions, then no-one else was allowed to be so in her place. His father, Brian IV (a distant cousin of Briony), was consistently absent, either on business or on contemplative pursuits. Brian’s fast-developing intelligence did nothing to bring him closer to his family - it was so far above that of his relatives that it only served to distance him further. Thanks to this upbringing, the young Brian ended up talking mostly to his computers, and at age eight he programmed his first simple AI to make them talk back. Throughout all his other experiments and fits of inventing, Brian has continued to work on and upgrade this AI, who he has named Computo, much to the disapproval of his family. Due to the pervasive feeling of ostracisement and suppression within his family, Brian has developed a rebellious streak, culminating in his refusal to attend the school of his parents’ choice - instead, he has moved into a house of his own and attended St. Jude’s. This is not because he is Catholic, since his highly logical mindset makes atheism the most acceptable “belief” for him, but simply to act out against his family and seek his own, individual path. His family disapprove, but they are pacifist to a fault and, rather than causing conflict, they have decided to wait for Brian to see the error of his ways and return to them, just as they did with his distant cousin Indigo, who is off in some other part of the country dying her hair ridiculous colours and being a youthful activist. In the mean time, they give him a small allowance on which to live, and he supplements this with small profits from the more useful of his inventions, programming work, and bribes to do the homework of the school bullies etc. (to adequate levels that net them a pass, but nothing more.) Despite the fact that he is rebelliously more emotionally open than the rest of his family, he is still inexperienced in interacting with real people, and as such he tends to suppress his emotions to a large degree.
