Prompt: Five times that Brian disappointed his father.

1. We were having carrots that night. I don't really know why I remember that. I suppose it could be that I stared at my food so long that it's sort of ingrained in my memory. My mother attempted to hand me the phone, but I wouldn't take it. I knew who was on the other end. This was the third call this week. I'm not sure why he was trying, what had changed, and maybe I didn't care. She shook her head and whispered something into the receiver. I didn't see her hang it up. I just heard her chair move and the click as she picked up her fork.

2. He stood expectantly in the doorway. I pretended like he wasn't there concentrating on the book I was reading. Well I was more pretending to read it than anything, but I still felt his shadow. I'm not sure how long he stood there. "You'll never amount to anything if you have a quitting attitude." He was trying to make me get over the turtle incident, or trying to act like it didn't happen. I don't know what made me not get up. Maybe I wanted to have a quitting attitude. Finally I heard an intake of breath, somewhere between a sigh and a dismissal and when I glanced up a second later he was gone.

3. I was perfectly fine with Community college. My grades could have gotten me better I guessed, but it didn't make sense to leave right now. The only reason I think Mom didn't agree with him was because she was quite content for me to stay here as long as she could manage it. Either way he continued to make his opinion about it known.

4. He was packing his gear in the living room. He still gave me that look from time to time, but I was used to it by now. "You should be out doing something." He must be desperate to be considering other sports. "I'm not interested." I did my best to look at him when I said it, but my eyes mainly focused on his bag. "My friend went to an awful lot of trouble." I nodded. He had made sure I was well aware of the trouble I was causing. I shook my head and looked up in time to see his back and hear the door slam shut.

5. I sat under a tree watching all the fathers and sons fishing off in the distance. It was hot and I had made the mistake of complaining once. My dad said I should 'tough it out' that I wouldn't learn to be a man if I didn't take that to heart. At that moment being all of five I didn't care. Normally I liked fishing, but the day wasn't the same after that moment. And the shade was nice anyway.
