Theres an article circultating of lifetimeofservice.org with the following paragragh:
"There is something very wrong behind the idea that we have to pay people to be volunteers. As a matter of fact, it is an oxymoron. You cannot have a paid volunteer because they are not volunteering if they are getting paid. The motivation and commitment shown by true volunteers is unmatched by any congressional appropriation. The Nation is answering the call to be Good Samaritans and treat others the way they want to be treated."
I have seen this sentiment before, mainly from a letter that the director of a prison who rehablitates his prisoners with bible verses and Jesus' love wrote. I didn't understand it then and I do not understand it now.
NCCC volunteers are not paid. They recieve free housing and food, and a small stipend to make their work possible. Even with these amenities, many NCCC volunteers have a hard time making it through the year and have sacrificed finacial security to be there. The good samaritans who are answering the call are an amazing and inspriational group of people but the fact remains that they don't have the trainning or team synergy that makes NCCC so effective.
Basiclly, anyone who uses this arguement to justify the shut-down of NCCC is a ridiclous and short-sighted person who needs to take their head out their butt.
