I thought that the author was VERY GENEROUS in not painting Dr. Wilbur as the outright villain of the story; I would like to think that at some point she actually had noble, if spectacularly misguided, intentions, but the more I read, the more she seemed really, really culpable for most of what happened, and predatory, and intentionally manipulative. Shirley was consciously lying and acting, too, but I'm much more sympathetic to her...though I admit that the author may have meant to garner that exact response from her readers. Maybe a different writer would have made Shirley seem much less vulnerable, immature, and naive. The thing about biographies is that you can find out what actually happened, sometimes (and that's valuable and interesting in this case), but you can really only speculate about people's true motivations and inner lives.
I start like nine million books I never finish, actually. Sometimes I don't have time, sometimes I don't like the book, and sometimes, for some reason, the subject matter or the author's writing style is just hard for me, and it takes hours to absorb five or ten pages of text, and it makes the book not worth continuing to grapple with. (And, true confession, I still like and look for books with pictures, diagrams, photographs, or illustrations over books without. They help my reading comprehension. :P)
I love white apples even though I could tell it was kind of bad then when I read bones of the moon I was like, this is actually bad
Yeah, definitely
I enjoy a lot of Jonathan Carroll's books, they're really bizarre and hallucinatory and I like that, but I really don't get why so many people think he's some kind of literary genius, or even just a good writer/storyteller. Maybe I'm not sophisticated enough to understand what game he's playing, maybe it's an "Emperor-has-no-clothes" deal. I'm not sure
( ... )
also, did you get the impression he TOTALLY made up the plot of white apples as he went along
like iirc isn't there a random character who reveals himself to be gay, and then later he turns out to be the villain, and be obsessed with the main woman, and they never even explain why he said he was gay earlier in the book? am I wrong?
