it's already too hot to breathe today

I stopped to talk with two of the little girls who live down the block, and the one wearing the glasses and the pale blue headscarf (I think she's the eldest, and I know there's a better word than "headscarf" for the type of clothing I mean, but it eludes me) called over to a third, who was busy running through the sprinkler on their lawn, to come ( Read more... )

As I was reading this entry, I heard a tour guide say, "So, if you ever get stressed out because you feel like you have to be an adult, just go up to the children's reading room!" It felt quite apropos. That said, I definitely agree with this. I mean, sometimes I worry that the only reason I feel that way is because I want to validate certain habits of mine (such as getting really enthusiastic about things, overusing the word "really", approaching everything earnestly, and wearing bright clothing), but these habits are not harmful, and I feel like being able to be comfortable with the choices that make you who you are is also a big part of being "mature". That was... the longest sentence ever, and I'm not certain it made sense.

Anyway, I'm glad that people like Miranda exist, to give me hope that you can exist happily and successfully in the adult world while being whimsical and earnest and ~challenging the paradigm, even if you have to deal with silly reporters and hipster backlash. Basically I just want to be her.

(edit: oh! I was going to say, I feel like I always respond to your entries really fast and sometimes I feel weird about that (WOW I SURE DO HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS) and I just wanted to say that it's because I'm always online at work, not because I'm... creepily monitoring your LJ. haha.)

No, I like your long sentence! I don't think I'd be half as defensive about this stuff if I weren't someone who has retained a lot of "childlike" or...uh, "teenagerlike?"...mannerisms and interests into her twenties, etc. I also think I have a valid point, no matter that it stems partly from a desire to continue doing things I like to do without feeling as though I should feel guilty about them.

...Actually, I like your whole comment! Yay, comment!

...Also, I think it's actually hotter there than it is here. They said the East Coast wouldn't be safe for long, but wow. How can you drink coffee?

1. I had to wake up pretty early; it wasn't as hot then.

2. I really like coffee.

3. I can always drink the coffee in the basement if the kitchen is hot enough to make it unpleasant.

THIS IS SUCH A DEFENSIVE RESPONSE, JULIA. Hahaha.

why do *I* not have a coffee icon yet? fitz_clementine July 20 2011, 21:36:53 UTC

I'm pretty sure no. 3 is classic "the first step is admitting you have a problem"- prompting material.

Wait, are you drinking it in the basement to HIDE IT FROM PEOPLE? (Also, totally not judging. I have had a Diet Coke problem since I was three.)

i need to get on that, right. fitz_clementine July 20 2011, 22:14:05 UTC

No, it's just that it's cooler in the basement. It's still a basement , though, you know?

( Three?! And I thought I was hardcore for kicking off an intense caffeine addiction at fourteen.)

It's my mother's fault. ("FROM YOU, ALL RIGHT? I LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU!") There is a family story that, at Thanksgiving dinner of 1993, my grandmother asked me what I wanted and I told her that I would just have a glass of Diet Coke with ice, please. I'm shocked that I haven't died of some aspartame-related disease yet.

Well, I am a little, but on reflection (and popcorn), it's very possible I'm just hungry.

Oh no, I hope my corniness didn't nauseate you.

(I want to make some kind of popcorn/corniness joke here, but I'm not sure how it would work out.)

It did not! I think spinning around in circles on a very empty (or full) stomach is just not wise.

THAT'S LOVELY. I need to spin around in circles more often.

I'm in the middle of a crisis where I really need to go buy more Diet Coke, but I'm so tired that I want a Diet Coke to help me move. I think there was a scene like this in Trainspotting, except that was heroin.

Can I give out internets? Do I have that right? Because "I think there was a scene like this in Trainspotting , except that was heroin" TOTALLY DESERVES ONE.
