And then she got really high on common pantry spices.

And then her mom went to the hospital.

And then she slept for three hours in the middle of the day.

And then she read a bunch of magazines.

And then she walked three miles in the rain beneath an umbrella that looked like the face of a sunflower.

And then her mom had to have emergency surgery.

And then she stole a green notebook.

And then she didn't go to the party.

And then she found out that the all-night diner never, ever kicks you out as long as you don't fall asleep and keep asking for refills of coffee.

And then she wrote in the green notebook with a purple pen.

And then the sun came up.

And then she ate a Greek omelet and left a lot more money than she needed to on the table because the waiter had let her stay all night, just like the sign said, and because he had tried to keep drunk people from bothering her, and because he had once, at around four, correctly identified another patron's T.S Eliot quote.

And then she walked three miles in the pale, clear morning light, and the bike path was full of slugs, small and alive and glittering in the dawn.

And then she took a shower.
