Copper Dyeing

Aug 22, 2010 19:57

I soaked 2 copper tubes (from Lowe's) and 2 copper pot scrubbers
in a 50/50 ammonia/water solution for weeks.
I then put the wool in for about 6 minutes at a time.
This wool was dyed about 3 weeks ago.
Here you can see the wool roving before and after.
The dyed roving is the exact color of my new sofa!
After finishing the water in the jar was a very pale blue.

I let the copper/ammonia solution sit until yesterday and
it turned a brilliant blue.
So I dyed some more wool.

Look at how much darker and richer this color is.
I didn't even add more ammonia to solution either.
This wool roving was left in the dye bath about 10 to 15 minutes.

I'm practicing spinning cocoons with this roving
and plan to knit or weave some cushions for my new sofa.

And I still have lots of copper/ammonia solution left
to dye more wool roving if I need it.

This is something that must be done OUTSIDE!
