I love deals. My sister turned me onto a deal hunting site and now I mostly just occasionally skim www.slickdeals.net and www.fatwallet.com though I used to be much more active. In 2005, I recovered $2211 (basically I paid $518 for stuff worth $2316). (and really my final cost could be considered even lower since I often turned around and sold those items on ebay or craigslist for a profit.)
Many of those deals take effort. You have to cut out UPC codes, make backup photocopies, submit rebate forms, and follow up with companies to make sure they pay up. Out of 150+ deals, I had only 3 failed offers last year. A $9 rebate never showed up and the onrebate site doesn't allow resubmissions. I never got around to mailing in a $5 rebate. And I think a spam blocker must've eaten the free movie codes I was supposed to get. But 3 out of 150 is not bad at all.
But tonight's deal is pretty quick and easy. Sign up for credit cards, use each of them once and then collect the bounty. Don't sign up if you have no self-control with credit cards and will sink yourself into debt. Don't sign up if you're worried about lowering your credit score in the near future. Applying for credit does ding your score by a few points but after more time has passed, your score will creep back up again. But if you're trying to lock in a mortgage next month, you'll probably want to skip these offers for now. OK...on to the deals!
https://promo.schwabon.com/AD046/AD046Home.asp?campaign=ccip05&mp=ccip05g4x1 Charles Schwab offers a free 512mb ipod shuffle
Sign up for their credit card, make a purchase within 45 days of the opening date of your new account, and then an ipod shuffle will be mailed to you automatically within 8-10 weeks.
I'm now in the waiting period for this but I did call and confirm with customer service that I've fulfilled all obligations on my side. I know some of you may think that the ipod shuffle is dinky but it's free and will be handy for working out.
http://tinyurl.com/e26xdCiti Professional will give you a $100 gift card after your 1st purchase. This is only good if you've never signed up for a Citi Professional credit card in the past. (and CitiBank does check it's records. I missed out on a similar offer trying to bag a free ipod mini after I had already collected a $200 bounty on a previous offer.) I haven't signed up for this one yet but I will be. I got a $100 bonus on a Sony card in December but sadly that offer has expired already. Worried about this deal still?
